Title: Rules and Goal of Playthrough
Post by: MrsFlynn on March 30, 2021, 12:34:25 PM
    ~ General Rules:

  - Town: Player's choice. This will also help us see how the career progresses in different towns and what issues we each have with the career.

  - Extra money making allowed from any non career/self employment source and from the decided upon Career. (So you don't have to live in a totally ugly house...priorities people!)

  - Trips to World Adventure Worlds allowed.

  - Time in University Allowed but only if your sim is making a genuine effort to complete a degree *snicker*

  - No trips to the future.

  - Having a family and pets are fine, but we're trying to concentrate more on the PI Sim and their career.

  - Romantic relationships allowed.

  - Can use items from all eps/sps, store and custom content.

  - Static Needs - Allowed, if you want to give more time for skilling and socializing, etc.

  - Buydebug - Your choice.

  - NRAAS Mods - A must (no kidding but you really should use them!)

  - If wanting to edit your save file, as in adding extra Sims or lots, do so before starting the save. Be aware, it may cause issue with the PI career if you edit while playing the save file.

  - If moving or replacing the Stadium, make sure to add it to a Community > Visitors Allowed lot type. This will help cases like Wayward Jalopy and Bad Call work better.

    ~ Goals of the Play-Through:

To complete the top level of the Investigator Profession and LTW of Pervasive Private Eye

To share any tips and tricks that work well (and perhaps share those that don't work quite as well lol).

To get as close to completing the Life Time Wish as possible: We decided that this would be up to individuals to choose but Pervasive Private Eye is a good fit.

Eventually support your sim off the proceeds of the profession without the need to earn simoleons in any other way. Which may be pretty tough on these Ambitions Professions/Careers.

~ Important Notes on the PI Career:

✦✦ The Help Investigate opportunity (The one where Sim goes to the police station to offer their psychic services) is bugged. It does not register as completed. This case is actually for the Fortune Teller Career (Supernatural Expansion). It's best to cancel out of this opportunity when it pops up. This does not harm the save or PI career progress.

   – Careers from Ambitions may not be scripted to be used with venues from newer packs, for example Showtime. If you have any lots in your save from the different packs it may cause issues with the P. I. career.

     ****

   – Issue: PI Career May Have Issues with Edited/Moved Lots. (Example: Science Lab/Stadium)

If you find your Sim gets reset and aren't able to complete a case or part of one, it may be due to the lot being placed from the library, edited or moved. Try again with an unedited version if available, skip the case or the step in the case that is glitching. For example, step 8 of the Art Heist (Robo Heist). Use Nraas Debug Enabler to queue up the step after to help possibly finish/solve the case.

   – If moving or replacing the Stadium, make sure to add it to a Community > Visitors Allowed lot type. This will help cases like Wayward Jalopy and Bad Call work better.

   – If the Science Lab rabbithole is moved (even slightly) or replaced, you may have issues with cases as well.

   – Rabbit hole rugs and doors may not help and have the same results as replacing, moved or edit lots.

   – Rabbitholes place in basements may not make the some cases work properly either, due to them being placed/moved down to the basement.

✦✦ Some PI cases may or may not work or work well in custom worlds due to what lots are  placed or not placed when the world got created in CAW and if they creator used the original base game or Twinbrook science lab which were most likely coded to work better with the PI career.

✦✦ Combination Rabbitholes, rabbithole rugs and doors are known to cause issue with this career. The suggested work-around of replacing them with single rabbithole buildings may or may not work for some cases.

Please note replacing rabbithole buildings in the middle of a saved-game may make the case still not work correctly. It's recommended to skip that case and try a different one.

   ~ Tips:

   – To start the career, go to the Police station or check the paper for the Private Investigator Career.

   – Click on the police station to have the option to obtain cases and/or do low level police work that can bring in some extra money.

   – Try to do cases during the week day, say between 10am and 5pm (Monday - Friday).  Reason being - it seems cases have more of a chance at failing during evening/night hours, and some won't work on the weekends.

   – Doing Low Level Police Work gives job experience!! (up til you reach level 10 of the career.)

   – Skilling up in Chess gains Job Experience!! (up til you reach level 10 of the career and chess skill.)

   – Your Sim can earn more than $650 a case if they have the Opportunistic Lifetime Reward. Like $1300. each case.

   –  Cases take anywhere between 2 hours up to 11 hours in-game time.

   – Use computer to search for Investigator case or hack information database.

   – Hack Information Database does not give job experience.

   – Getting Degrees from University doesn't have any affect on the Private Investigator Career. The two don't have any connection.

     ****

   – The magnifying glass and finger printing kit are placed in Sims' inventory to use when needed for a case. These cannot be deleted while in the PI career. When Sim leaves Career they are automatically deleted.

The rest of the promotional awards can be sold off if desired, as they are placed in the family inventory.

     ****

   –  Break In Issue and Always Wanting to Go Home. (Dust for Prints/Search for Clues)

Wait till someone is home or befriend the Sim asking to dust for prints so you can go to the lot together.  Use Friendly Introduction.

Ask to Group Up. Click Map View to view lot. Click on the lot or front door of the home to have Group Visit that lot. When on lot, click on door to visit household. -- With someone from household being home it's easier to dust for prints, search for clues and to complete those parts of the case.

You can cancel the go home action when your Sim is searching the garbage can and/or mailbox for clues. They'll still complete that part of the case.

This sounds like it's a conflict between two processes of the game. One that allows the Sim to break in, and one that makes your Sim leave when no one is home or the family has left the lot.

Dust for Prints Tip: After being invited inside, look around for the magnifying glasses around the house, pause the game and then do the action. No more searching around no chance of the magnifying glass moving to a different object.

     ****

   –  It's okay to ResetSim FirstName LastName if needed. It shouldn't cancel out the case.

   –  Reset Sim you're trying to interact with, without resetting case.
Click on Sim you're trying to interact with > Nraas > DebugEnabler > Options: Sims > Object > Reset

   – Can't do stakeouts on residential lots, only community lots. Unless a case prompts a stakeout on a residential lot.

   – Writing stakeout reports doesn't take any writing skill and you can get $250. from each report written.

   – Stakeouts are only possible from level 2 onward and can write reports after doing a couple-few successful stakeouts.

   – A stakeout takes about 1 hour 20 minutes - in-game time.

   –  A couple of tricks for the stakeouts:

When a case calls for a stakeout use map view to look for a special map tag, click on it and your Sim will go to the corner of the lot to do the stakeout. This is sometimes helpful for some stakeouts.

When doing random stakeouts, you want to leave room for the stakeout action to take place or else the game says something like There's nothing going on here. However, this also happens if nothing happens during the stakeout. Though some of these stakeouts still count toward the stakeout want or wish you pin to complete.

If the stakeout doesn't go right first try, leave the lot and come back to it by clicking on the map tag in map view.

     ****

   –  If the case icon is slightly off screen and you click it and you can't select Visit lot, use the mouse or arrow keys to go over to the lot and then click the mailbox and/or garbage can to Inspect or search for clues.

     ****

   – If having a hard time following along with a case. Click on the Opportunity tab in the user interface for notes on the case.

     ****

   – If needing to inspect something and it doesn't give the option, click Map View to look for special map tags on the map.

     ****

   –  Mouse over the Lifetime Wish to see information about the wish and case count.

     ****

   – Work outfits are known to be buggy.  Have Sim switch to another outfit before saving the game. Or else you'll load your save and find an invisible Sim. This can be fixed by clicking the dresser and and select plan outfit or click on Sim and select Change Outfit.

     ****

   –  Tip: Trying to Confirm Presence

Once Sim goes to work (into their rabbithole), around 9am you should be able to confirm presence. This part may fail if trying in the afternoon.

     ****

   – Issue: Game assigning Service Sims for cases.

If you find you aren't able to search the garbage on an unoccupied lot and need to cancel the case. It's suggested to either try case again, during the day. You may need to try more than once. - You can use Nraas Debug Enabler (https://www.nraas.net/community/DebugEnabler) to get the case list.

See this post (https://jadekitten.net/mfhot/index.php?topic=161.msg1456#msg1456) to see how to use Nraas DebugEnabler's PI Case List.

3. Custom content town that may not have the lots and lot types needed for this career to be successful.

~* Nindigo's Notes *~

I spend about a week with Anna-Liza doing unrelated things in order for her to accumulate the 10.000 lifetime happiness required to purchase a LTW change. The next 5.000 she spent on the Legendary Host LTR, because she is a friendly and mingling sort who prefers to make friends and not use blackmail and beat information out of people. She is a little too old, friendly and frail for a lifestyle like that. It will be much better and easier when people are going to just spill their secrets over a cup of tea while stuffing themselves with freshly baked cookies.

Riddle Photo Album (https://ibb.co/album/mvztDZ)

Important Notes:
- For some reason, Anna-Liza's job titles sometimes differ from the ones listed in Carl's Sims 3 Guide (https://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/careers/ambitions/privateinvestigator.php).
- Make sure your Sim is properly on a lot when conducting stakeouts and not too near the edge.
- Don't add new residents mid-game. The case generating algorythm chokes up, and cases either won't or take ages to be called in.

Yasmine popped a want to do 10 stakeouts, so I pinned it and had her do a couple.

Most of these photos are from before I pinned the want. - Click images to enlarge.

I am noticing some of them aren't completing and I'm not sure why. These stakeouts are done by me clicking on a random lot and having her do a SO there. Sometimes I see other Sims run up in front of or to the side of Yasmine and do the SO action, but even then SO doesn't complete.

It's a little annoying, but they do make for cute photos that can then be used in stories. lol

I'm going to try this profession with Miraj in Twinbrook on the side in a fresh save. It seems the phone calls don't work when new residents move into town. As if the case generating algorythm chokes when new Sims enter the list of possible candidates to use in a case. I wonder if it is the same if you play as a new addition too. That might also explain why you don't get many phone calls, MrsFlynn.

Update: So far, it seems Miraj is receiving a case call a day just like Anna-Liza did. Of course, he and VJ were already residents when Miraj started. I also started the save with Seasons installed.

ONe way to get around that is to go to t he police station and click on "obtain new investigator case" or something like that. On my first day I had Hetty take on 3 cases. you're able to take on as many as you can complete.

I started my PI playthrough. I independently chose Appaloosa Plains and I chose Hetty Lionhart. If anybody has taken a look at her, she is pretty ugly and evil looking. I completely remade her and made her a YA. I also edited most all of her contacts since most of them (18 out of 20) were strong dislikes and one enemy. : /  She also had some pretty bad traits which I changed. I gave her friendly,

Here are some pics:

ONe way to get around that is to go to t he police station and click on "obtain new investigator case" or something like that. On my first day I had Hetty take on 3 cases. you're able to take on as many as you can complete.
Good to know. I prefer the one phone call at day though since I like to also do other things with my Sim/Sims. I rarely just test something out without giving the Sim/Sims an actual life. Also, it is nice to learn something about the game mechanics.

Very true.

I'm playing the PI in two different saves now - both in Twinbrook. It's funny to see how some of the same cases revolve around the same Sims in both saves, independently.

Will you both be taking notes on what cases you get at what career level in each of your games?

For example:

Level 8
Case Title - Disappearing Auto

I think I may have already mentioned this, but I am interested to see if the game gives certain cases at different career levels. In my experience I'm thinking yes, but what cases those are I'm not quite sure yet. It may be different each play through?

Miraj's Cases

*Notes:
- I am convinced that the level of logic decides what cases are offered. Miraj kept getting the same low level repeat cases while his logic was at or below level 3.
- I decided to marry Kat Hunter to her boyfriend, because she kept giving Miraj the same In the Name of Love case over and over.
- Reading up on logic sped up the promotions. I didn't even register that Miraj was level 9 before he was promoted to level 10, Private Eye. Oopsies.
- His level 10 service reward did not trigger right away. But wow! Miraj got a full ceremony with the mayor outside city hall - Anna didn't. He also got a 4 day long +50 Neighborhood Hero moodlet.

Found a "new" case called Great Clap Trap of an Art Heist. It's not on the Wiki's list. I did take notes of the case and will type them up later unless someone else can find notes on the case?

I ended up having to cancel at the very last part of the case (Confirm Criminal's Presence) due to Yasmine getting reset via Errortrap. The best we can tell is that Aggie may have gotten eaten by the game. It sounds as though the game deleted after she went into rabbithole.

It's suggested to use DebugEnabler to fix invisible Sim, if that doesn't work use MC Total Annihilation to fix or cancel the case and try a different one.

And some good tips:

- Try to confirm presence right aft the Sim goes to work (into their rabbithole). This is usually around 8-9am (Monday - Friday). Otherwise the case may fail.

- If these cases are done on the weekend they won't be able to be fulfilled.

MrsFlynn, I'm going to also suggest that you try a playthrough of this profession with only basegame and Ambitions. Those annoyances you describe also haunt my game regularly when I have everything installed. Which is why I loathe to play like that. I feel it improves my experience when playing with just a few enabled.

I have a question; Is it normal to not get any cases at lev 5? She's gone 3 week days and one weekend now w/NO cases at all. The only option I have on the police dept is "low level police work."   :(
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through

That definitely doesn't sound right.

Are you trying to let the game give you cases or you getting cases from the computer/police station?

Ooooh wait, you mentioned earlier you were playing in Appaloosa plains, right? As now that I'm thinking on it, that happened to me first playthrough in AP. I ended up getting Yasmine a laptop to help with getting cases. As the combo buildings are a little buggy like that. In my experience.

You might try placing a single police station on a different lot to see if that might help. I didn't try that when I was in AP.

I had just thought of this that the combo bldg is probably interfering. I'll try the method of placing a single police station and see if that works.

From what I understand it's best to leave the combo building until after you've placed the single rabbithole. I haven't tried either but am curious if placing a single rabbithole building works.

Where you feel best about playing. Since both towns have single-building rabbitholes, I don't think it matters that much.

If you find anything please do post about it. I did enjoy my "visit" to AP and hope to visit again.

I hate to blame rabbitholes for all the glitches. I really don't think it's fully the rabbithole's fault. It maybe partly the opportunity that ends up happening at a rabbithole.

Investigator Miraj in Appaloosa Plains

*An investigation of how good or bad the Investigator profession integrates in a town with combined rabbithole buildings.

*I play with just the basegame, Ambitions and Pets installed.

*I moved Miraj and his spouse into a starter home located at 71 Rachelle Lane, and had him join the Investigator profession right away via the cheap computer, I gave them.

*First case was called in at 10:23 AM on the Sunday of game start. That's way quicker than in any of my other saves.

*An observation: It feels like the case generating algorhythm is struggling a bit to find suitable case candidates among AP's residents.

Cases by Phone Call

1. The Case of Gnome Footsy
Client: Oriole Bird
This very first case interestingly involved a homeless townie who is employed by the game as the local Stylist. Miraj was asked by the client to search through the target's trash. This posed a challenge, because homeless townie are exactly that - homeless. But, as you probably are aware of, the game directs homeless townies to different lots when they go home. It can be an empty lot or an unoccupied house that becomes their unofficial home. In this case, the townie has been "assigned" to such an unoccupied house, and the case wanted Miraj to search the trashcan on that lot. The magnifying glass icon was there as it should be. Butt, since the townie target is technically still homeless, Miraj did not get the option to search the trash when I clicked on the trashcan.

Solution: Having NRaas MasterController installed, I clicked on the house and added the townie target to it. Now, he actually and officially lives there. That solved the issue. Miraj was now able to perform the search.
*I don't think the issue can be solved the slow way without the use of this mod. It would involve some manual labor like getting to know the townie and asking them to move in, then splitting the household, etc. And that would most likely cancel the case.

2. The Case of the Hacker Elite
Client: Hetty Lionheart
This one was called in about 36 hours after the first one around 10 PM or so. Solved smoothly.

3. Hacked!
Client: Jazlyn Parrott
Called in the following day in the early afternoon. Solved smoothly. Service award for solving 3 cases.

4. The Case of a Little Dirt
Client: Felipe Marshall
Next door neighbor case. Solved smoothly.

5. The Case of Gnome Footsy
Client: Kim Marshall
Again, the target was a homeless townie assigned to a vacant lot. I had to properly move her in there using MC, before Miraj was able to search through her trash. After the case was closed, I moved her into an actual house.

6. The Case of the Longing Heart
Client: Hailey Shepherd
No homeless Sims this time. Solved smoothly.

7. The Case of Gnome Footsy
Client: Patricia Bedlington
*Groan* No homeless Sims. Solved smoothly.

8. The Case of the Aloof Academic
Client: Alouette Bird
Alright! This was a missing person case. Miraj was sent to two different combined rabbithole buildings - school/stadium and hospital/science facility. And you know what? They solved smoothly. No problems whatsoever. So, it can work.

9. The Case of the Missing Pink Feathers
Client: Johnny Johnson
The case Bye Bye Flamingo by another name. Solved smoothly.

10. Hacked!
Client: Gavin Pinkerton
Gavin crushed on Miraj. Smooth sailin'.

11. The Case of the Snail Mail Jam
Client: Booker Singleton
Solved smoothly.

Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through
Post by: Sonshine on April 06, 2021, 04:19:12 PM
Good news! HS does have all single RH bldgs. In AP, they're all combined and I think that this is what caused my stint as a PI there to fail. In order to make it successful there, I would have to replace the city hall, police station, and military bldgs and bulldoze the combined bldg. So far though, my sim is lev 6 an no problems w/it yet.
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through
Post by: Sonshine on April 06, 2021, 05:36:34 PM
I ran into a glitch now. I don't know if it is my comp or the game, but I'm trying to do the "Case of the Culinary Backstab and I'm supposed to dust for prints at the suspect's home. I did a break and enter and got one set of prints. Now I can't get anything. There was one end table that was enabled, but when I got there, the ability to dust was gone. I think I'll quit this case and try another one.
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through
Post by: MrsFlynn on April 06, 2021, 07:25:49 PM
When breaking into a home you run the chance of the game basically transporting you back outside either the home or back to your home and locking you out of the house you're trying to dust for prints in.

It's better to try to befriend the Sim and visit their home with them so you can then dust for prints without very much hassle. Also from what I understand the objects that you have to dust for prints on can change mid-case.

Good idea to quit the case and try another one.
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through
Post by: Sonshine on April 06, 2021, 08:26:19 PM
Actually, except for the "dust for prints" action it went good except that it made the owner an enemy. he never got kicked out or sent home or anything. I did another case and then this one came up again and this time I waited for the sim to come home. Last time the owner spent her time at a hang out and then from there to work. I could have reset her to get her home again, but I didn't. Anyway, it completed this time and Granny Shue was the culprit who was giving spoiled food to customers!!! Shame on her!

Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through
Post by: MrsFlynn on April 07, 2021, 11:36:58 AM
I agree with Nindigo, it could be the cases that are glitched as well. There may also be other factors that go into the issues with the cases.

Still working with Yasmine in her PI career. Got the Art heist case what seems like 2 or 3 times in a row. Canceled each time. As they just won't complete even with the troubleshooting I've done.

Still planning on doing a test run with just base game, ambitions and maybe one other expansion, but am having a lot of fun with Yasmine and Rex. Da cute puppers...*Snicker*

Yasmine got sun burnt while searching for eggs at the Spring Festival. I couldn't stop laughing at the gnomes... Those bunny gnomes multiply quickly!! Just the day before I only had one of the bunny gnomes on the lot. lol

I think that might be true. I certainly had troubles in AP. Whatever the case may be though, my AP run just did not work. Who knows though, it might have b een my comp problems! Can't wait for next week to get this comp in for repair!!!

Speaking of the PI career, didn't you have troubles w/the "Case of the Disappearing Auto" Mrs Flynn? I just completed that one w/o any hitches at all. I vaguely remember having problems the first time though quite a while ago. This time the target sim was not only home, but had the day off from work! That turned out great! It seemed like I had to do 100 stakeouts at the business office though! I had started at night and then it got too late and had to continue the next day. It continue thru much of that day and then I got the msg to go to the police dept. Whew!
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through
Post by: MrsFlynn on April 07, 2021, 03:42:42 PM
Yes, both Dee and I had problems with that case (CoDA - Case of Disappearing Auto). I tried it a couple of different times in AP and it got stuck in the stakeout loop. It allowed to progress in the career level and writing reports, but would not allow the stakeout to complete. I had to cancel the case both times.

Tried it twice in Sunset Valley - 1st time Errortrap reset Yasmine and had to cancel out because of it. 2nd time was with a test Sim and solved the case without any problems.

The other case I had to cancel after fully troubleshooting is Great Clap Trap of an Art Heist

Tried my art heist save two more times in a new Sims 3 folder no mods/cc or store stuff. It was a save earlier in the case and it still didn't allow me to confirm presence.

What I tried in confirming presence....

1. Just after Aggie getting to work

2. About 1:40pm (just before she leaves work).

3. Meeting her there and touring with her, canceling that to try to confirm.

4. Trying to catching her before work.

5. Waiting for her to leave work.

It just won't complete.

I did get back into my main save and canceled it. It came up a couple/few more times and canceled it again.

I am very happy to hear you were able to solve the CoDA case!! I don't think I've gotten it in my current save, or if I have I may have canceled it.

I have another problem right now. The new case (case of the rogue cop) requires a stakeout at the park,  but the stakeout icon is over the bistro. I'm not sure what to do.
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through
Post by: MrsFlynn on April 07, 2021, 09:24:31 PM
I've only had that case come up once so far and have had to cancel at the last part of it due to... goes to look at notes....

I couldn't get the criminal to show up at City Hall even after inviting the criminal to city hall twice. -- However, this may be player error in that it was a Saturday in-game that I took this case. Didn't think that cases like this may not work on weekends. *Blush*

If you want to help this case along you may need to place the Big Park - Performance Park from the Community tab in the library. I don't think it will count if done at the bistro.

Though do give it a try. As if you don't have Showtime installed or enabled the game may do substitutions and it might count that as a substitution.

Share how it turns out? :)

I don't know. He had another one where he was supposed to snoop for clues at the park, but he went someplace else (can't remember the place atm) and it still counted. I'm wondering if EA didn't goof on the names of the places. As w/the first one, there is no highlighted option to snoop at the park, but there was the highlighted option the other places.

I've had something like that happen when trying to contact the criminal in attempt to meet them somewhere. - That they'd come over, but never show up.

In my last play session I just played, taking care of the garden and went to the Spring festival. Going to jump back in-game soon.

I've got an idea for that Art Heist case if it comes up again... Replace the actual Science Center rabbit hole with a new copy. *Blush* I feel silly that I didn't think of it before.

Reading over the older PI play-through (https://www.carls-sims-4-guide.com/forum/index.php?topic=30642.msg490342#msg490342) notes at Carl's helped give me the idea.

It's actually quite nice having those to read through. It's an interesting read to see what cases where easily solved and which we had issues with.

I've come to the conclusion that this part of the case is glitched. The criminal is at home and says "sure I'll come over in a little while," but never shows up.

Good idea to cancel. Can you refresh my memory as to what case it was?

It's Sunday evening in my game and am getting ready to take a new case but before I did I replaced the science center just in case I get the Art heist case again.

If the case you needed to cancel has any interaction with a rabbithole, you might try replacing the rabbithole? I'm not sure if that will help the case work better, but it might be something to consider.

If I get the art heist case I'll let you know how it works out with the new rabbithole.

It is "The Case of the Rogue Cop" one. I don't know if it is the City Hall or not, but I have to call a sim to invite them over and when they arrive, I have to click on the city hall and call the police to turn in the criminal. This time around she was not on his contacts so I made her a contact w/mc. Now when I click on her thumbnail to try to invite over, there are no options at all. I'll try going back again and get a different criminal. So far though, out of 2 attempts, both of them never show up. I'm not sure how Nindingo fared b/c she was working on the same case.

Ah okay. I remember having to cancel that one because the criminal (Vita Alto) wouldn't show up at City Hall even though I invited her out to City Hall twice. Once on the weekend.. As at the time I didn't realize these types of cases needed to be done during the work day. *Blush* So my next attempt to get her to meet me at City Hall was sometime Monday.

It didn't complete, so I just canceled out the case.

If Nindigo did try this case and was successful with it, hopefully she's got some tips to share. :)

The Case of the Cop Gone Rogue:

I don't even get to the part where I must wait for someone. It is the stakeout after the initial interview with the client that doesn't complete. I have to continue doing the stakeout, because my Sim "doesn't see anything". This is okay - I have to during other cases as well, and they complete after some attempts. The implicated Sims change, yet, it works out. But this specific case simply poofs at this stage.

(I just completed the insanely lengthy art heist with no problems whatsoever. Also, Anna is a level 10 Investigator now.)

Update
Using DebugEnabler, I'm able to try and force a case on Anna like with other opportunities. Strangely, when I select The Case of a Cop Gone Rogue, it says 'unable to fulfill requirement'. Does it require level 10 Logic? Because she doesn't have that.

Thank you info Nindigo!! :)

I am unsure if the case Cop Gone Rouge requires lv10 logic or not.

Yasmine does have lv10 logic so I can try. I was hoping one of the Nraas mods would allow to pick a specific case.

I am not real familiar with Debugenabler, do you know the path to be able to choose specific cases?

I'm not going to play the all-packs-enabled PI game after all. Instead, I'll be trying a young Anna playthrough. She is starting out with logic maxed. We'll see if that makes a difference. I kinda want her to have kids :)

I just tried the Cop Gone Rogue case and Yasmine got reset via Errortrap, just before finishing up the last part of the case. Ugh!!

I'm at 34/35 cases. So I'm going to do my last case and see if it completes and then call this game good if it does.

Then set me up a new PI save with base game, Ambitions and maybe one other expansion.

One note is that except for 1 case that required me to snoop for clues at the library or somewhere people read for free, the other two said to "snoop for clues at the park," but in reality one was at the police station and the other at the bistro. I think this boils down to an EA error. We'll see what happens when I get my comp repaired.

Yes, they worked fine. I gave upon the one to snoop at the bistro b/c I got a bit confused w/it saying to snoop at the park. The second one where I had to snoop at the police station also said to "snoop for clues at the park."  It said park, but it was the police station. That's what I meant by EA error.

It's quite interesting playing with just the two installed. :)

Sonshine: I find it extremely odd that your snoop jobs are wrongly marked. I have never had that happen even once. How about you, MrsFlynn?

Sonshine: Below is how the smart phone menu looks in my game with everything installed. There is no difference between the cell phone and smart phone. However, besides Debug Enabler, I also use Master Controller and Master Controller Cheats which may account for the extra options present in my menu. Some of NRaas' mods do work together like that.

Long List of Options - Click on Opportunities

Add Opportunity

Careers

Click on Case

Thank you Nindigo for having me check the path in my new game. I really thought I was missing something. Another reasons our photos might be different is because we might be working with different mods, and game patch levels and maybe finding the case lists in different ways?  ??

- Original disc version - 1.67
- Using this mod (https://modthesims.info/d/499140) to disable packs. It's called Sim Game Selector 3.0
- Debugenabler V54 (Newest Version?)

On an unrelated note, I'm trying to play Miraj again in Twinbrook with only the packs that came before Ambitions enabled which are the World Adventures expansion pack and the High End Loft stuff pack. This should also limit the amount of conflicting scripts, I figure.

As for your point about patches, MrsFlynn...playing with the most recent patch should fix potential problems not dealt with by earlier patches, right? Sonshine, what patch/version of the game do you play with?

Those freckles really are cute...

I'm going to have VJ and Miraj switch roles. Miraj really wants to be in regular Law Enforcement. So, I'm going to play an evil Private Detective with VJ instead. Starting with level 10 logic. This can be done by cheating, or by having the Sim live their first 2-3 days at the library.

On a more serious note, Anna and 1st Miraj both have only 5 cases or so to go. AP Miraj is done with his 11th case. Those are my current active PI saves. I have tossed any other PI saves I had. This one with VJ is new. Please don't judge me too harshly, lol.

Nindingo, I do have MC Cheats, but as you could see, no "career" listing. I'll try removing some of my mods to see if one of them is blocking it.
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through

A heads up: VJ got a case on game-start Sunday called Help Investigation. He was to help out the police with a cold case between 8 AM and 12 AM any day, but it was due on Thursday. Regardless of what I did or did not, when he exited the police station, he was reset by the game and the case poofed. I read in several places afterwards that this case is very glitchy.

Sonshine: Too many mods are never a good thing. Especially script mods that interfere with or change the game's own scripting. It may result in a communication breakdown. But I'm sure you already know this.
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through

That's a cool idea to have Miraj in Law Enforcement and VJ be a PI. :)

That case (Help Investigation) sounds familiar. Does it have to do with physic services? I do know that opportunity just doesn't complete.  Or is the Help Investigation case something different?

So, Miraj. How do you feel about VJ doing the PI instead of you?

By the way, the starting brown trenchcoat is for gals only. Gents get a dapper suit as featured by VJ.

Also, by the way, after putting my Alvi lads in a fresh save, VJ started to receive phone calls even with logic at level 10.

This profession is so sensitive when it comes to the slightest change to the town and residents.

I think PI is actually PMS in disguise :o
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through

LOL Nindingo!

I just found out that my glitch might be sim related and not mods. I took a major amount of mods out and I *still could not get careers to show up under "add opportunity!" So I switched to another sim and put her into the PI career and went through the path and guess what? Careers DID show up! I put all of the mods in and I will try that same sim again and see what happens. My guess is that it will. Maybe we're not supposed to play that other sim? Who only knows!

Edit: I was right! Either that town is really glitched or that sim in AP is glitched.

Ah okay. Thanks for the tip on the trenchcoat.  VJ looks handsome in his duds!! :)

I am happy to hear VJ receives phone calls. I was actually worried about that, as Melani is lv6 Logic and I really don't want to stop skilling so to be able to still keep getting cases by phone.

I've even noticed some of the "case calls" come via messages on the screen. lol They just pop up like opportunities do.

I fully agree - PI is actually PMS in disguise. :o

This happens if, for some reason, your Sim does not pick up the phone. Like when autonomy is disabled. You probably didn't hear it ring - happens when you are looking around town or focused on a different floor/room on the home lot where your Sim is not at.

This case (Fishermen's Local 105) popped up and tried to go along with it, but ended up having to cancel it due to the stakeout at the diner wouldn't complete.

It sounds like other players have experienced this. One offered the suggestion of buldozing lot, and replacing the diner.

What I've done is just replaced the diner, not the lot. If the case won't complete again, I'll try buldozing the lot and placing a new diner.

FIX: The Case of the Fisherman's Local 105 Diner Stakeout
https://www.reddit.com/r/Sims3/comments/gw4mhk

- Cancel the case, bulldoze lot and replace the diner as it's something to do with the lot/rabbithole.

Post by: Nindigo on April 12, 2021, 01:18:11 AM
I did this one very recently with Anna-Liza Riddle, and it solved smoothly. Stakeouts often take a few tries for me before they complete. It has to do with the involved Sims arriving either too early or too late after my Sim begins the stakeout. It really shouldn't be this sensitive, but, well...it is.

Those pop-up regular opportunities are usually also called in first, but if not responded to they pop up. That is how the scripting works at least. But, that the game acts differently than it should is pretty commonplace, don't you agree? ::)

Thank you for letting me know it's solvable.

I tried 2 or 3 different times before I gave up. It took me -forever- just to get the fishing part of it done. It says fish for 4 hours. I ended up fishing for 3 in-game days. I'm wondering if the case needs a high fishing skill.

Ah that's cool to know about the cases. Yep, I agree.

Even with all it's wonkiness I still enjoy playing Sims 3. And it's even more fun when playing it with friends. lol!! :)

Private Detective VJ
* Name: VJ Alvi
* A/G/T: YA Male Sim
* Sign: Scorpio

* Traits: Childish, Evil, Inappropriate, Perceptive, Snob
* Faves: Sushi, Indie Music and the color Red

* LTW: Pervasive Private Eye
~ Solve 35 cases on the job in the Investigator Profession

* More Info: Playing in "basegame" Twinbrook which has single rabbit hole buildings just like Sunset Valley. VJ begins the profession with level 10 Logic (profession's main skill), because I want to learn if it affects the type of cases he receives.
* More Info+: Charisma skill and Charismatic trait are very beneficial for this profession. VJ is not inherently charismatic, so he will just learn the skill.

*Notes:
- Playing with maxed out Logic seems to boost job performance meaning your Sim receives promotions quicker. The cases don't seem to change much, however.
- Interesting. Cases seem to pay out maximum from the beginning when starting the career with level 10 Logic. That is §650 per case.
- Profession level 3 is the earliest I've ever gotten a missing Sim case. With Miraj not even a single one.

VJ's Cases:

--- Eavesdropper, Level 1 - starter Investigator outfit

1. The Case of the Gnome Footsy
2. The Case of the Hacked Off Client

--- Small Claims Investigator, Level 2 - magnifying glass

3. The Case of the Missing Mouthwash (service reward)
4. Digging for Dirt

--- Superfluous Sleuth, Level 3 - Investigator's door

5. The Case of the Aloof Academic (missing Sim case)
6. Digging for Dirt
7. The Case of the Missing Mouthwash

--- Caper Crusader, Level 4 - fingerprint dusting kit

8. The Case of the Longing Heart
9.

Looks like I'm more patient - sometimes, it will take me 5 tries before the stakeout completes.

I probably would have tried a couple more times, but I was already a little frustrated with how long it took to get the fishing part of it to complete. lol I literally went around to all the lakes and oceans around town.

Do you have any tips on that case?

Yes. When it says 'fish in pond' go fish in a pond, not the ocean. Lol, that sounded harsh - I mean, just follow the exact instructions. Fish for more than 4 hours if needed. Sometimes, the game doesn't count right.

Give stakeouts several tries and save before each try, because the case could cancel after a failed stakeout. Like my rogue cop case has done twice now. I did the Fishermen's case with Miraj, not Anna...just checked my notes. The stakeout at the diner succeeded on the 5th try. I recall placing Miraj behind the diner the last time instead of in the front - but still on the lot, mind.

I hope this helps :-\

Yes that helps!! Thank you!! :)

I just tried the case again, and it solved without a hitch!! Whoot!! That was with about 5 hours of fishing in the Ocean, as after that I remember (from previously trying this case) having to do a stakeout at the beach. The stakeout at local diner - smooth like butter lol.

When it says to fish, it doesn't tell you where to fish, it just says fish. That's one of the things that threw me off by this case. So I fished around the different ponds and such before it registered as finished.

Yep. Solved it with two Sims, actually. It is a lengthy one with many steps. But I had no issues.

I was able to solve the art heist case as well. Took me a few real life hours. lol But I did it!! You weren't kidding when you described it as lengthy.

I didn't even have to use DebugEnabler either. Which I thought was really funny. Why it took me so long is because It came in on Friday mid-morning and by the time I was ready to confirm criminal presence, it was Friday evening -way- after quittin' time at the Science lab.

I spent the weekend gardening and writing stakeout reports. :)

Awsome - congrats! The "luck" of having to wait two whole days ;D

Since I just experienced a bump on the road, I wanted to share some advice...

VJ was to do the last part of a case - report findings - but the client glitched inside their home. VJ somehow couldn't reach them on the street or get a response if he tried to visit them. I then tried to reset the client's home lot which made the case bug out completely. It said that the client was no longer available, although he was still there, and VJ was to return home to complete the case which didn't work.

I make a habit of saving my game after each successfully completed step of a case. In this case, there was nothing left to do, but to quit game without saving. When I loaded the game up again, I used Master Controller to open the clien't home and he seemed to be fine. Then I had VJ 'report findings' and this time it solved smoothly.

Whenever something glitches - instead of cancelling the case altogether, try to simply go back a save. And only save after a successful step, not in the middle of something glitching.

That's a great tip!! I've been doing that more with Melani's game. Now that I know a little more about the career and where it might glitch.

It's when you're not sure or just don't know it's actually glitching. I've experienced both those. Something that I really like is if you're feeling stuck and not sure if the game is glitching or whatnot you can quit out the case and try again later. Or like you said, go back a step and try again. :)

Would this work for the rogue cop? How would you get the criminal sim to the courthouse though?

Sonshine: I don't understand the question, as I have never gotten to that step. All I can think of is, that if a Sim is not doing as they are supposed to, and you just saved, then you have saved too late in the process? :-\
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through

I have run into my first seemingly unsolvable case. There were even two different outcomes of failure - what a treat. Let me know how this particular case solves for you guys?

Case: The Case of the Wayward Jalopy
Client: Cherish Curious
- Interview the client
- Question the target
- Snoop for clues on the beach
- Analyze tire tracks at the police station
- Conduct stakeout on the beach...FAIL

* Outcome 1: After failed stakeout attempts, the case cancels itself
* Outcome 2: The stakeout succeeds, exp is awarded, the case still cancels itself

Is it just me, or are beaches prone to make stakeouts fail? Possibly because it takes quite a while for Sims to get there, as it is not exactly (usually) a towncenter location?
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through
Post by: MrsFlynn on April 13, 2021, 03:30:43 AM
The last time I got the Cop Gone Rogue Case I had to cancel it because of the last step in the case didn't complete, but that was with a different save.

I can try that one with my new save to see what I get for an outcome?

I'll try the Wayward Jalopy Case as well.

I don't know if beach stakeouts are prone to fail. I haven't had very many of them in new save with Melani so far.

I have noticed the random stakeouts I do to fulfill the stakeout want that I've pinned count when I've done beach stakeouts. But those seem to work slightly different then stakeouts that are part of a case. At least in my experience.

As for it taking awhile to get to the stakeout points or from point A to point B for a case, I don't think that matters as much ??  I'm not sure though. As it seems the game will setup as soon as your Sim gets to the lot if it's behaving correctly.

It matters. Sometimes, Sims arrive so late that the stakeout ends as they arrive or shortly after. I also read somewhere that it can mess up a stakeout :-\

That's actually good to know. As thinking about it more - that makes sense. That might be why some of my previous stakeouts have failed in my previous saves.

I'm not sure if there is a fix or work around for stakeouts that aren't near by.

I'm finding I'm not able to do either the Rogue Cop case or Wayward Jalopy case. Both cases give me a message of Unable to fulfill requirements for opportunity (Case Name). I went through DebugEnabler to find both cases.

XX. Cop Gone Rogue
Unable to fulfill requirements for opportunity EP2_Case_RogueCop1

     -----

XX. Wayward Jalopy
EP2_Case_MissingCar1
Unable to fulfill requirements for opportunity

Makes me wonder if this is happening because I don't have but Base game and Ambitions installed?  That maybe these cases come from different expansions and that's why they can't be fulfilled? Or maybe I don't have the correct lots placed?

Thoughts?

----

Edited to Add: (Aug.18.2023) some notes -

This error may happen because you're playing in:

1. An edited town/save where the lots were either placed or replaced from the library.
2. Rabbitholes were replaced, rabbithole rugs or doors were used.
3. Custom content town that may not have the lots and lot types needed for this career to be successful.

The Wayward Jalopy case did allow me to go through a couple of parts of the case, but after finishing at the police station for the Analyze Tire Marks, it just popped her out of the police station like it was done with the case.

That struck me as odd, so I tried the case again via DebugEnabler. That's when I got the message Unable to fulfill requirements for opportunity.

I decided to reboot my computer and try the case again. It gave me the message just after I selected it from the case list.

I searched on: Nraas DebugEnabler - Unable to fulfill requirements for opportunity

And got this:

I Can't Complete Some Career Opportunities
https://www.nraas.net/community/Opportunities#I-Can-t-Complete-Some-Career-Opportunities

Quote
These have not all been documented yet. Often opportunities can not be completed. Here's a couple of Tips:
Some could be genuine game glitches however these were supposedly reported as all being fixed in one of the patches. If you are still having problems completing an opportunity it could be due to the fact the lots, buildings on a lot or objects needed to complete the opportunity are not available. In some cases certain skills are needed for objects to become available. There are a couple of things you can do to be able to move forward in the career:

Try to identify what is missing in the game and add it to the game
Set the Opportunity as completed and move on to the next one

This helps confirm that it maybe missing expansion(s) possibly lot(s), objects needed to fulfill case or possibly needing a certain skill and skill level.

I don't want to enable all the expansion packs just yet. I'm still testing out the career with just base game and Ambitions. lol Though after this save that I'm working with now I'm still wanting to enable Pets to get a feel for the career in AP.

Unless new cases were added later to draw on content from the new expansion packs, I don't believe this is why some cases fail. More specifically, I don't see why or how our two cases in question would draw on newer content. There is nothing about them which links them to any new gameplay whatsoever or objects.

I firmly believe the problem is the old and well known 'oops, we didn't fix that even though we said we did'. Because this is exactly the case with so many other bugs and glitches in both TS3 and TS4.
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through
Post by: MrsFlynn on April 13, 2021, 11:26:20 AM
Ah okay. Yeah I kept going over the 2 cases wondering about that - If there were links to new gameplay or objects from other packs. I can't think of any connections.

The only way I can think of to test that is to re-enable all the packs and then check the case list again via DebugEnabler to see if I/we can obtain the cases that way.

Right now I don't want to do that. Don't want to mess with the setup I have at the moment, as I only have about 6 or 7 cases left to go before mastering the Pervasive Private Eye LTW for this round. lol

I did try this. No change.

I have looked at some comments on Carl's guide page...they are helpful in understanding this profession:

'Igor140 says...
i've put a lot of time into a lot of PI characters, and i've got some notes.

first off, in my simming experience, this is the second buggiest career/ job in the game... next to lifeguard (i have never gotten a single assignment across 4 lifeguard playthroughs).

so, a few things: stakeouts are EXTREMELY buggy... except in sunset valley. i have done a couple dozen stakeouts there, and only had one fail.

other neighborhoods are MUCH less successful. isla paradiso, for example, has a 0% chance of a successful stakeout. that's not a type: ZERO PERCENT. i have attempted close to 100 (37 that i have counted, and an estimated 50 before that), and exactly none of them ever worked. so any opportunity with a stakeout will most likely have to be forfeited. fortunately, there are enough opportunities that you can master the career without them.'

***

'Igor140 says...
"study at the library" is (as admin noted) a university related opportunity and should be canceled.

likewise, "aid police with your psychic abilities" seems to be a fortune teller opportunity, and i've never gotten that to work as a PI either. i've never received it as a FT, but i haven't put much time into that career, so maybe it does show up where it should. regardless, if it shows up for your PI, cancel it.'

Did you guys know that you can continue to search for a case on the computer if the one it offers doesn't appeal to you? That is pretty useful knowledge.
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through
Post by: MrsFlynn on April 13, 2021, 12:02:13 PM
It's good to know you tried it, bummer that it didn't help. That's something that needs to be added to the case list notes - Rogue Cop and Wayward Jalopy cannot be complete due to it being buggy.

I've seen the Aid Police with Your Psychic Abilities opportunity. And know to cancel it. I've never gotten the Study at Library opportunity I don't think. But we can also note that needs to be canceled as well.

I do know you can use the computer to get cases. In this particular save I have been getting a lot of cases by phone and was hoping to keep going with that, but I've recently stopped getting case calls.

So I might have to use the computer to get cases. :(  It's not the end of the world, but I was enjoying getting the pop up messages --- You've Got a Case!! lol

It is nice that you can skip cases that don't appeal to you or the repeats without any problems. I agree that is useful info!! :)

I would say that this profession is really good if one wants to get to know the residents of a town. The phone calls make you feel that your Sim is part of a community and needed. As opposed to simply digging up cases manually. The ceremony outside the cityhall when your Sim reaches Investigator level 10 is very immersive and just plain awesome :)

I do like the ceremony for the Lv10 PI.

You know what.... I don't remember Melani going to her ceremony. I might have missed it? It was after the Fisherman's Local 105 case from what my notes say. Possibly during that case? I'm not sure. *Blush*

I've noticed Melani hasn't gotten a couple-few of the service rewards.. The key, placard thingie with the magnifying glass on it or the ribbon award. Not sure why.

Yasmine got all that and the globe like thingie that sits on the floor. in the living room.

I'm crazy. I just started my Alvis up in Hidden Springs. Needed a change of scenery. Waiting for VJ's first case to ring in. Had him and Miraj max out Logic prior to getting hired as a PI. Miraj is unemployed currently. Maybe it is less disturbing to the case generating algorhythm.

I'll be taking the notes we discussed.

Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through
Post by: Nindigo on April 14, 2021, 03:47:36 AM
You are very welcome - we are having great fun and are learning :)

VJ just solved The Case of Gnome Footsy as his first in Hidden Springs. The suspect was the town's science geek which was really weird, because the game assigned his home to be one that is already occupied by actual residents.

When VJ arrived at the address, the objective window became an Invite Over clickable button. I used it and the geek came over briefly to chat before leaving again. VJ was able to inspect the garbage can in peace - the actual residents did not come home (they usually do as if they can feel someone is on their lot, lol). The geek was not available to be questioned afterwards for whatever reason, but the game just quickly skipped that part, and then VJ was to report back to the client. He closed the case without a hitch.

I don't know why the profession picked an NPC for this. It never does when I play in Twinbrook. Maybe it happens when it is played in a different town? Maybe the algorhythm has no list of actual residents in other towns besides Twinbrook? And it just picks from a larger and more "general" list in other towns.

MrsFlynn, you do what makes you happy. That is more important than rules ;)

Important note!
- When you start this profession with a Sim who has level 10 Logic, cases pay out max experience and simoleons ($650) from the beginning.
- The wish to conduct stakeouts begins to pop up after the first promotion. So, I guess stakeouts are only possible from level 2?
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through
Post by: MrsFlynn on April 14, 2021, 07:54:56 AM
Right. :)

I'm trying to stay true to keeping my game basic - for the lack of a better term. Less interference to the PI Career.

As like what's been said before, the more you add the more it can interfere with the way the game works.

It's one of the reasons I took out some of my mods and all my custom content. Oddly the only expansion I am really missing at the moment is Supernatural for the elixir register. lol

With trying to minimize my garden. hehehehe yeah... *Blush* I can garden and get my extra harvestables to the consignment shop with in the same day or early next morning.

I don't really know the general mechanics behind the PI career. The Gnome Foosty case always seems to go smoothly for me.  But all my recent testings with exception of 1 has been in Sunset Valley.

Though I feel you're on to something in that the PI Career was made for Twinbrook, but added to  the other towns without much thought and so it picks from a general list.

Correct - Stakeouts are only possible from level 2 and can write reports after doing a couple-few successful stakeouts.

I did add to my PI journal to fish in the ocean as a suggestion. Which seemed to help when I had to do that one over. As I seem to remember I canceled that one to try again later. And it helped to fish at the ocean. However at that time Melani was level 5 or 6 fishing skill. So I did note that maybe high fishing skill is needed.

Though it's been said it can be done with lower fishing skill.

It's definitely iffy as to if the game will register the stakeout as complete to help fulfill the stakeout want/wish.

I did notice when I was in Appaloosa Plains there was hardly anyone around when you needed them to be. Please tell me that's not the norm for that town? I remember having to look around town at 10am trying to find Sims to talk to for cases.
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through
Post by: Nindigo on April 14, 2021, 09:14:48 AM
Miraj just fished in his own pond at home for the 4-hours fishing step in the Fishermen's Local 105 case. It completed smoothly.

When you need to talk to people during a case, just head for the public lots such as the big park, the library, gym, etc... I have noticed that the game is wired to usually make townies go to where your Sims is at. Unless it is in the dead of night.

Hope that helps to know.
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through

It is helpful to know to go to any community lot to be able to find Sims.

I just found it odd that even at 10am there wasn't anyone around the different community lots in AP in that particular save. It might be different now. I don't know.

I know the game pushes Sims to the community lots as I've seen it happen in Sunset Valley. But it didn't do that while I was playing Yasmine in AP.

It's one of the reasons I decided to do more testing and start with Sunset Valley to get a better feel for the PI career. Now that I have a better feel for the career, I feel better playing in AP as I know more of what to expect. :)

I waited out the weekend to see if I'd get anymore cases by phone and didn't.  I had a feeling that might happen. Makes me really wonder what triggers the case calls to stop.

I'm not entirely sure what to do to troubleshoot. I really don't want to go back to a previous save before case calls stopped. I would loose my case count and have to do at least two of those over again. One was called in and is a repeat of an earlier case, the other I got by computer and is one of the longer cases.

I'll try resetting everything via MasterController. I haven't done that in this save for awhile.

I know we can get cases by going to the police station and via computer. In this particular save I tried to let the game do it's thing - basically give cases via phone or messages on the screen. lol

Was getting cases by phone even after Level 10 of the career. They seemed to stop after Melani got to level 6 or 7 logic skill.

I've only got about 7 cases to go and it seems I'll have to do that via the computer. Not a big deal. I've done it before, but was enjoying getting the cases via phone.

Here are some Noir pictures of Miraj's ceremony: https://ibb.co/album/qkFy3K

I have some tips for when we must inspect a target's mail and garbage:

- Have your Sim pay the target a visit. Instead of going inside with the target (cancel that action) after they invite you in, wait a moment until they are inside their house. Then turn to the mailbox and garbage can to do your task. The target Sim and their household will just go about their business inside, and you can keep a watchful eye on them.

- If the target is not at home, have your Sim stand around on their lot for a bit. Usually, the target or one of their family members will come home and automatically invite your Sim in. Then just do the same as above.

- If it is very late (past midnight or later), Sims at home won't invite visitors in. But being on their lot, you can see them move around inside. It is also safe to rummage in this situation. They won't come out to interact with your Sim this late.

- I never use break in. As far as possible, I try to do these steps of a case while the target is at home. Sometimes, the target can't come home, like, if they are at work. Then it is safe to rummage.

- Toddlers who see your Sim rummage don't react, and your Sim will ignore if they look on. Newspaper delivery kids, on the other hand, will disturb your Sim's rummaging and react very negatively.

- I recommend disabling your Investigator's autonomy.

This is a save specific bug/glitch, because my Sim with level 10 logic is getting calls.

Thank you for the confirmation Nindigo. I'll try Melani in a new save to see if that helps.

-- It resets the Lifetime Wish, but I was expecting that. She's still level 10 PI and has some maxed skills.  Did this happen to you Nindigo when you had to add your Sims to a new save?

It took about a day and a half, but I finally got a case call...errm... message about a case. Yay!!

You have to be patient with an old lass like TS3 ;)

It is unusual that your Sim is not disturbed by the residents. My Sims will stop their shady activity when spotted. Does your Sim by any chance have the Inappropriate but in a Good Way LTR that came with the World Adventures expansion pack?

I have far less phone calls other than the case calls. I have a feeling this is due to only having Base game and Ambitions installed.

No date calls, love letters or gifts. There's still attraction, but that doesn't bother me as much as getting date calls, love letters and gifts.

If you do the cases now while in Starlight Shores and max her LTW. It will most likely be continue to be maxed if you move her to the next town with the family.

In my experience it's moving while she still has cases left to do that may reset the LTW. Since you play with Traveler and Story Progression installed, it maybe different. If you haven't, you may want to see if anyone else at Nraas has experience with moving via Traveler and keeping case count.

I sent my Twinbrook VJ and spouse to France for one day. After they returned home, I moved an NPC in who was made pregnant with VJ's child. She gave birth some days later. But not since returning from France, has VJ received a single case call. After three days, I had him quit the Investigator profession and rejoin it. He went from Gumshoe rank down to Superfluous Sleuth. Still no calls. I think I have butchered the case generating algorhythm as far as calls go.

I also feel like flushing that save down the toilet :-\

Yeah that sounds like you may have butchered that game. :(

It maybe best not to travel when trying to do the PI career? Or just know if you do you may end up needing to get cases by computer/police station.

I do remember from playing other careers that if you quit and rejoin that career you get hired at a lower level of the career. That's most likely by design.

I've experienced some cases where I can go through residents mail and garbage being undisturbed, some will even just walk past as they're going inside their house.

All Melani has right now for lifetime rewards is Super Green Thumb and Opportunistic.

I've gone back to my previous save where I only have like 6 or 7 cases to complete before maxing the LTW.

Then I'll try a new save in Appaloosa Plains.

I'd rather do that than start the case count over in Sunset Valley again and that way I don't feel like I've "failed" the challenge. lol

Even though I miss getting the case calls, I just can't this save up with only a few cases left.

No, he did not lose his case count by going to France.

Have to laugh at them. :)

Wha-hoo!! Finished all 35 cases!! You can read about the cases in my PI Journal here (https://jadekitten.net/mfhot/index.php?topic=161.msg1447#msg1447).

I got the last few cases with the computer, as I lost the cases by phone option and didn't want to start the case count over again.

I'll be starting a new save in Appaloosa Plains next with Melani. It may be a short save depending on how the career works for me in AP. If it gives me too much trouble, we'll be "moving" to Twinbrook.

I'm glad I'm not the only one accepting some of the same cases over again.
In Twinbrook, I had the same case involving the exact same Sims twice. Case: In the Name of Love - client: Kat Hunter target: Buck Green

And you actually managed to complete the Art Heist case---well done!!!
It solved smoothly for me twice :-[

I was trying to find a specific case via DebugEnabler and may have found a new case?. I'm not sure what it's real name is, but in DE it's called Missing Friend Case, but gives me the message Unable to fulfill requirements for opportunity.

Anyone have more info and/or have been able to solve the case?

Found some more cases that are giving me the message of Unable to fulfill requirements for opportunity

Nraas Name | (In-Game Name)

Bad Call - (The Bad Call) - Needs a Big Park lot in Town to trigger the case.
Loved   - (Unsure Heart) - Needs a Boy/Girlfriend Couple in Town to trigger the case.
ManLoved   - (In the Name of Love) - Needs a Boy/Girlfriend Couple in Town to trigger the case.
MissingCar   - (Wayward Jalopy) - Needs consignment shop to trigger the case and it's about the timing of doing the stakeout. Suggested to do in the morning hours and visiting the shop during business hours. - Maybe need to know the consignment shop Sim before it can trigger?
MissingFriend   - (Missing Mate)
Spa   - (Freshwater Pumps) - Needs Salon and timing needs to be right, check in with a stylist during business hours to trigger the case.

I'm thinking this is what we get for trying to get cases via DebugEnabler?  The only one on that looks familiar is Bad Call.

** Some cases need to meet specific requirements and have specific lots available in the saved game. Also the timing needs to be just right. If it's off, it doesn't work quite right.

A new record!

The Case of the Cop Gone Rogue
- Interview Client (exp received)
...and then the case canceled itself

Also, VJ hit level 10 Private Eye...and nothing happened. No ceremony, not even the town key reward. Nada. Zip. Zero. Nothing.

When VJ reaches 35 cases, I'm going to stop playing this profession. The level of bugginess now seriously takes the fun out for me.

I totally understand. Thank you -so- much for helping!! :)

If you want you can quit now if you'd like. Since haven't you gotten 35 cases in a couple/few other games as well?

Most of the cases I found via DebugEnabler I'm going to leave off the official list since there isn't any information about them and they most likely won't come up via regular game play.

I did note on our official case list that Rogue Cop and Wayward Jalopy cancels or doesn't work properly.
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through
Post by: Nindigo on April 17, 2021, 12:34:32 PM
No, VJ will get to complete his LTW of 35 cases. No quitting before that.

What really annoys me is that this case - the rogue cop one - is supposed to net you a service reward from city hall. It has never cancelled for me right after the initial interview before. When I read about others doing this case, they get stuck when they are supposed to confirm a criminal's presence. I never even get that far.

When I've tried to test both Rogue Cop and Wayward Jalopy - via DebugEnabler. They both give me the message can't be fulfilled.

Though I remember getting Rogue Cop case once and getting stuck a trying to confirm presence.

Err...a case of missing mouthwash just cancelled itself on VJ's way to meet the client.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to stop here, MrsFlynn :(

Let me know if we should play a different profession together, I am game.

Oh my goodness, really?! Geeze. I'm sorry. That's just odd. As that one is a sure solvable one for me hands down. I'm sure you've gotten that one to solve before too.

I totally understand quitting!! We've both put in a good amount of testing. I'm getting quite disgusted myself. I pinned a want/wish to do 10 stakeouts and went to 3 different places to do them, and none of them counted. Grr!! I know I should be a little more patient, but it's like ugh!!

I think I read some where that the PI Career is easiest to play in Sunset Valley and/or Twinbrook. I think I agree. It doesn't help that I'm feeling the the game itself is being a little grumpy. But AP and I have never really gotten along all that well either. It's one of the reasons I hardly play in AP.

Hmm I like the idea of doing another playthrough. Do you have any suggestions?

Oh, you shouldn't apologize. I'm sure that if this profession had been made by you it would have been working perfectly ;)

I'm not sure what playthrough to do next.

For some days, I have been wanting to play my Alvis in Hidden Spring with just Late Night enabled, since HS apparently has been tuned for that expansion pack. I would like to play VJ as a Star Quality (that is a LN personality trait) vampire who has the LTW, 'Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous'. And poor Miraj has still not become an International Super Spy, so I would make him achieve that.

Maybe I can whip up some scandalous drama involving VJ...I kinda feel like it. Maybe I won't play them as spouses this time, but just as brothers, and have them make babies around town ;D

Nindigo and I have decided that we're done with our playthrough.  We're both coming up more and more bugs and glitches. It's getting frustrating and not fun.

Having said that, I did have fun playing the PI career and am thankful to have friends join in on the playthrough. It's definitely more fun playing Sims with friends. lol

It is definitely a career for great story telling. If you go into the career knowing that it is buggy - but that you can cancel a case if needed. You can either get a case by computer or phone. You should do okay. :)

I do have a couple-few photos to share. We did a PI career playthrough in 2019 in Riverview and this dog came up to my then PI Sim, Calista. I snapped this photo of her brushing the dog.

Fast Forward to this year, looking at that photo made me want that dog. I don't think I have the save file anymore. So I tried to re-create the dog. I think I did a fairly good job. I named the dog Oreo.

Dog from Calista's game -

And Oreo the dog from my current game -

I want to say Thank you to Nindigo for the idea to make a bulleted list of the case objectives. Doing that really helped me when trying to solve the cases.

I edited our official case list to reflect the bulleted objectives. You can find that here (https://jadekitten.net/mfhot/index.php?topic=161.msg1316#msg1316)

Thank you, guys, for the quality time with friends <3

I couldn't agree more, MrsFlynn. This profession is quite okay for light gameplay and storytelling purposes. Not so great for completionists and perfectionists. I might even start it up again sometime, but without trying to fulfill the associated LTW. Playing as an Investigator is great if one would like to get to know a town's residents, as it really takes your Sim around.

Good Game while it was fun, and you are very welcome :)

I'm sorry that I wasn't able to help all that much. I guess RL just got in the way. : /  Sometimes by the end of the day, I'm just not in the mood for sims and do other things. I wonder if choosing a case by the DE (Nraas Debug Enabler) method may result in more cancelled cases. I'm not sure, but I would like to try this one in SV or Twinbrook just to see if it is as buggy.
Title: Re: Private Investigator Play-Through

I didn't use DebugEnabler for many cases. Maybe one and it was successful. I have noticed that DE doesn't have all the case listed either.

There are some cases while looking at them in DE that will give a message - something along the lines of Can't fulfill. I haven't been able to figure it out as to why specially with playing in Sunset Valley with nothing moved around or changed. Playing it like it was originally released with Ambitions added of course or you don't get the PI career. lol

I had a lot less issues with the PI career when playing in Sunset Valley. It was fun. There were a few player-oopsie moments too. But we won't talk about that. hehehe *Blush*

DE - Stands for DebugEnabler

Here is the path for the case list:

Click Active Sim > Nraas > DebugEnabler > Options: Cellphone > See long list of options > Click on Opportunities > Add Opportunity > Careers > Click on Case > Long Case List

See this post (https://jadekitten.net/mfhot/index.php?topic=161.msg1456#msg1456) for PI Case List via DebugEnabler w/Photos.

You actually can't accept cases from DE specifically. Well you can and you can't. You have to specifically use the path that I mentioned to get to the case list and select it. Then accept it or not.

That option (Click on lot and get a case) isn't an option. I tried it. lol Was so hoping that would be an option like the other careers, but it's not.
