    ~ General Rules:

  - Town: Player's choice. This will also help us see how the career progresses in different towns and what issues we each have with the career.

  - Extra money making allowed from any non career/self employment source and from the decided upon Career. (So you don't have to live in a totally ugly house...priorities people!)

  - Trips to World Adventure Worlds allowed.

  - Time in University Allowed but only if your sim is making a genuine effort to complete a degree *snicker*

  - No trips to the future.

  - Having a family and pets are fine, but we're trying to concentrate more on the Architect Sim and their career.

  - Romantic relationships allowed.

  - Can use items from all eps/sps, store and custom content.

  - Static Needs - Allowed, if you want to give more time for skilling and socializing, etc.

  - Buydebug - Your choice.

  - NRAAS Mods - A must (no kidding but you really should use them!)

  - If wanting to edit your save file, in adding extra Sims or lots, do so before starting the save. It may cause issue with the Architect career if you edit while playing the save file.

    ~ Goals of the Play-Through:

To complete the top level of the profession and possibly the LTW? -- Home Design Hotshot ~ a Total of 100 Great Reviews

To share any tips and tricks that work well (and perhaps share those that don't work quite as well lol).

To get as close to completing the Life Time Wish as possible?

Eventually support your sim off the proceeds of the profession without the need to earn simoleons in any other way. Which may be pretty tough on these Ambitions Professions/Careers.

   ~ Tips/Notes:

Having a high skill in painting before getting into the profession is a good thing. Will help when it comes to renovating homes.

When client isn't home, do some of the renovation, then click on the floor of the home or click on the lot and select Tell Client Renovation is Complete.

Quickly cancel the action when the client arrives home, this will give you a chance to talk with them to get to know them and discuss the renovation. This helps in possibly getting a bonus.

- Get the Observant Lifetime Reward as soon as possible. This helps learn others traits faster.

Try to wrap the renovation up before 6pm or you will not get paid and game will consider it a failed renovation. You can't check back the next day. The game won't let you.

Check Map View to find jobs available between 8am - 6pm. Do not start to late in the day or else it will be considered a failed renovation if you run past 6pm.

Add items from the family inventory to the renovation. Be careful, this adds to the budget remaining money and may reflect negatively on the review if client is rich.

If you're not able to chat with the client about the renovation, look around the house at what you can copy/paste into the house. Do they have expensive taste? If yes, use that as your inspiration. -- Use the eye dropper tool to copy a chair, if that's some thing they're asking for.

Be mindful of the money used. Unless they have a tight budget, try to save between a $500 - $1000 of the budget unless you know they're rich.

If renovations are done for children or teenagers, be prepared to wait til school is out (2 - 3pm) to have the client look at what you've done. The job could take up to 7-8 game hours to complete.

Replace with slightly higher quality item if possible.

Swap out items they already have... This counts towards the list of items desired!!

Not worth picking up furniture in junkyard. The replacement value is more than the cost of buying new.

If you have a skilled handy Sim to do the work on broken appliances, it could be worth fixing.

Furniture found in dumpster diving is worth keeping or selling.

Click on design icon via Map View to see renovation info and accept or decline jobs from there.

Click on Front Door to Continue or Tell Client Job is Complete.

Job Hours M-F - 8am - 6m. Watch for messages on screen.

Takes about 4 hours to Research Architectural Design
Takes about 8 hours to finish a large painting
Takes about 45minutes to take measurements
Takes about an hour for a review

VJ is my man for this experiment. Personally, I have never played this profession. Besides his 4 teen traits, VJ has been given Artistic upon aging up. He will be an evil home designer ;D We'll see how it goes!

I'm having VJ max his painting skill, before joining the profession. Miraj wanted a kid, so they adopted an elementary school child, a girl named Bayou :)

I'm trying to have Miraj complete all of the cooking challenges - never did that one before :)

*Notes: Twinbrook homes seem to have "convenient" extra space for this profession. I think it is the best place for this profession. Also, I have noticed that the work day bears resemblance to the Ghost Hunter one.

Oh, my...

Amy asked for a gym addition. I gave her everything she required, used her favorite color and threw in some extra decor, because she is artistic. I think it looks stunning to say so myself - better than the rest of her house to be honest. I spent around half of the budget money. She absolutely hated it. Poor VJ...and me.

It seems this career will gladly kick you while your down and with a smile to boot. *Sigh* I think it may be programmed that way.

So when you're feeling Yay I'm doing a good job and proud of yourself. It will throw a wrench and the Sim you're remodeling for will hate it.

It's a self-esteem killer!!

Also if you're painting skill isn't maxed you have more of a chance of clients not liking your work. Even if you decorate the place all spiffy.

I also feel for you Nindingo! I've tried this profession also and more often than not, it seemed like they hated the work. :( I'm pretty loathe to do it again although, I could try w/a maxed painting skill and see what happens.

Thank you, my dear friends. *stuffs face uncontrollably*

So far, it seems every other renovation gets a good response. But after the initial one, I have used less effort - at least while still at low level. Actually, one doesn't have to build rooms for some renovations - just placing the required items is sufficient. Other than that, I'm starting to view the jobs as an excuse to make Sim's homes more to my taste. VJ has maxed his painting skill and is churning out masterpieces en masse.

Here is a picture of little Bayou, their adopted daughter:

I definitely recommend maxing the painting skill first!!

You can do that naturally or cheat via Nraas MC.

Change the Skill Level -
Click on Sim > Nraas > M.C. > Advanced > Skill Level -
Click on Painting and on the checkmark to accept.
Type in the number 10 for Skill Lv. 10

Good idea to use it as an excuse to make over Sims homes more to your liking. lol

Are you still trying for maxing the LTW?  I have it set to that so to speak. But I am not sure I'm going to go that far.  As I've never in all my times trying this career have figured out the magic formula to get a great/top score.

Their daughter is cute!! :)

Depending on how frequent those top scores will become later on - yes.

lol

For me it depends on how much better I can get at the renovations. If I continue to get low scoring ones I won't be trying for the goal of maxing the LTW.

I'm having Melani paint to help pass the time between jobs (usually doing it over night). But she's not getting job experience for it. I'm thinking possibly it's due to maxed painting skill?

I thought ? active Sim still gained job experienced even if skill is maxed. If it relates to the career. At least that's how it worked for PI career and Logic. I watched while the job experience lit up while Melani was playing chess in my PI save.

Tip: Darker icons may be left over jobs from the previous day. - The icon in the upper right is slightly darker than the other two in the photo.

Tip: If doors/windows can't be placed due to too close to stairs.. move the walls.

I have to agree with Nindigo if I haven't already. Doing the renovation to suit yourself is very satisfying. So when you get a terrible review, you can still feel good that you've done an awesome job on the renovation.

Somebody should be really taking photos of some of their renovations. *Blush*

I've updated my AD Journal and cleaned it up a bit too...

My VJ has been painting extensively between jobs - I could've told you that it doesn't provide any job exp, because he started out with maxed out painting skill :-[

My Miraj, who started the PI profession with maxed out logic, never participated in logic-based activities, so I wouldn't know if that would have provided any exp.
Title: Re: Architectural Design Playthrough
Post by: MrsFlynn on April 28, 2021, 07:44:13 AM
I had a feeling that's how it works with the AD career and Painting. It seems they get more job experience from the renovations than anything job-skill related.

Thanks for the confirmation!! :)

I don't think there's any job-related skill to the AD career other than painting is there? I never thought to check that. lol
Title: Re: Architectural Design Playthrough
Post by: Nindigo on April 28, 2021, 08:58:49 AM
Looking at VJ's job responsibilities window, it says 'remodelling', 'painting' (if not maxed), 'reviews'. So, no - no other skills appears to pertain to this profession.

The issue with painting not giving job exp might be a bug, since logic-based activities give exp to investigators, and turning in captured spirits gives exp to ghost hunters. It looks like a pattern to me - a main skill, the jobs themselves, and a side activity to provide job exp. I have no idea about the other professions, but maybe we could "investigate" further after this little project?

Oooh great idea to investigate if it's a bug that painting doesn't give job experience. As like you said, it should. The other professions get job experience from their job-related skill.

Another tip:

If you don't really want to change residents' home, you can just place items that don't fit in - that way, you can easily spot them after the job and remove them :P

Silly me did a repeat job with a client that wanted a writing room. First time I did it I got a terrible review, so I figure I might be able to do better this time. -- Yeah, nope!!

Grumped that it was too cluttered. And can't get to new items.

I did take a tip from Nindigo and proudly made the renovation my own by making the rooms slightly bigger so there was room to get to said desk with computer and chair.

I didn't make the living room bigger, but did re-arrange it so that it had room around the coffee instead of the furniture looking like it was all crammed together.

Next time I'm in game, I'll go get photos of the house I'm talking about so you can have a peeksee.

I think I did an awesome job on the renovation and am proud of it even though I got a terrible review.

I just had a funny experience.

VJ was to renovate a client's bedroom, so he did. The client, who is an unlucky military dude who dislikes art, got a new and more expensive bedroom set. His reaction? 'I can't live in this squalor! You have to give me the bare minimum for living, before I let you leave!'. It sounded so desperate that I couldn't help but laugh out loud. I then had VJ add the expensive laptop to the desk in the bedroom. Client's reaction? 'I can't live in this squalor! Yada-yada...'. The window displaying the requirements for the renovation stuck, but it disappeared when I clicked the jobs button in the profession tab. I assume everything is back to normal now. I wonder if the client's reaction was due to the fact that I took his curtains away. I thought I was doing him a favor, as he dislikes decor. *shrugs*

I'm not really sure how the algorithm works for the AD Career. It's disheartening how mean it is in it's review mechanics.

I've tried before to appease the algorithm for the career and sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn't.
Title: Re: Architectural Design Playthrough
Post by: Nindigo on April 28, 2021, 01:45:44 PM
I have an idea, MrsFlynn, because this profession is a lot of grind and not very rewarding at all - especially to someone like me, who doesn't really care about NPC homes. Also, I'm not a builder. I find enjoyment in other things than designing. VJ has a workday currently, but I don't feel like starting a job like at all. So, what I'm saying is, that I will stop here with this profession. It should be fun to play, but the fun went away :-\

I'm invested in my little Twinbrook family though. VJ could take up something else. Just...not stylist, please? Lol, I usually dislike the dressing-up aspect of the game, and changing the looks of residents. I was a tomboy in childhood when other girls played with dolls. It does come over me sometimes, but I don't really want to feel forced. If that is okay? :)
Title: Re: Architectural Design Playthrough
Post by: MrsFlynn on April 28, 2021, 01:56:24 PM
Oh yeah!! No problem!! :)

I'm on the fence about playing some more as well. I want to still give it a little more time Just because I only got back into it a couple of nights ago. It has been somewhat discouraging.

However, with the tip you shared of making the renovation your own. I want to play like that for a little while longer before quitting. At least one full work day if I am on the ball I can get one or two jobs done in a day.

I'm not sure what to try next. Give me a few days and we'll see if we can come up with something then.

You play for as long as you want <3

I wouldn't mind playing with inventing next, because I learned today that you can get a hold of some nice items using the time travel machine. That speaks to my curiosity and...um, greed :P

I'm still playing a this career a little more. It's Friday in my game. I'm going to play through the weekend, painting. See what jobs come in on Monday and most likely be done then.

My goal is to complete 12 jobs. lol

As of right now I've finished job 10. Which was a good review. But I feel the client was a lot more easy going and did have more room in their house for the items asked for.

To where job 9 = terrible review, but their house was dark, cramped and there wasn't a lot of room to add the items asked for.

Sometimes, you do things a little backwards, sweet MrsFlynn ;D Why look up a household's name on Google when you can just hover your mouse over the client or their house after the renovation?

I got 16 jobs done with VJ. 9 jobs was liked, 7 was hated. Good luck on reaching your goal! I'm cheering for you.

As for the photos you posted...what did you change? What was the job? It looks a lot like before I started doing my Bayless renovation. I believe Gwayne wanted a study. I moved some things around to make enough space for the required items ;D
Title: Re: Architectural Design Playthrough
Post by: MrsFlynn on April 29, 2021, 03:14:22 PM
I wasn't in game at the time and couldn't remember who's house that belonged to.

It was a Writing Room renovation. I did this job for them twice. Both terrible reviews.

1st time they wanted a stereo, living room chair, desk chair, desk, computer and maybe something else.

They wanted same items plus a coffee table in the 2nd Wring Room renovation, so I moved the living room furniture around so it could accommodate a bigger coffee table while still having enough room around it.

While doing the 2nd renovation for them I made the rooms bigger, moved some stuff around so they were easier to access and made the bedrooms in the "loft" bigger. So they'd have actual room to get to their new items.

I'm not entirely sure why the terrible review, but I'm happy with it. :)

For the most part I tried to keep with the same foot print of the original house. If you look closely, to the original and my renovation you can see what I changed. The loft hallway or whatever it's called is one square bigger than it used to be as well.

Thank you!! :)

The other job (s) I am really proud of are the ones I did for Robert Castor. - Castor family 32 Sweetwater Loop

I absolutely love their house!! I didn't realize they actually had a basement til the 2nd renovation I did for them. *Blush*

1st renovation was to give the house more windows and doors. So I replaced all the doors and added some windows. This is where I removed some walls and moved some walls to make the upstairs hallway a little bigger and so I could actually place the doors. As they just wouldn't place otherwise.

I didn't think to take photos of that renovation. But I was lucky enough to get a new request from him of a new Living Room Redesign. I was actually really happy to get the chance to do this renovation.

I added new couches and living room chairs, some lights all over the main floor. This is when I found the house had a basement. lol Added some paintings I had done over the weekend, some lights, a big screen tv, and new washer and dryer, counters and sink.

He loved it and gave me a good review!!

I did a renovation before for Lenny Smith-Jones - Jones-Brown family 4 Poker Flats Drive of a Gym addition. Basically adding gym stuffs to their house. Got a good review for that, but didn't get photos at the time.

I got a chance to do another renovation for him. This time for a Man Cave. New Tv, couch and some other things, can't really remember...  I liked the house, it's got a cute beachy-vibe to it. So I went with it and rearranged (living room and kitchen) and added extra things (around the house) that weren't on the list. As I was sure to get a good review.

Yeah... I got a terrible review. That really -really- shocked me. As I thought I did a pretty amazing job.

I did take photos this time anyway. :)

I've done 14 renovations and out of them I got 7 good reviews. AD Journal Update (https://jadekitten.net/mfhot/index.php?topic=178.msg1617#msg1617)

Like Nindgo said, there is a lot of grind and very little reward in this career that for me it's exhausting trying to do your best in the renovation and then feel like you're getting slapped in the face when the Sim comes back with a terrible review. Takes the fun right out of it.

I admit I don't feel like I am good at designing homes = furnishing and decorating aren't my thing I'd rather build. lol   But I thought I did a pretty good job on at least some of the renovations I did. It did help to have just base game and Ambitions installed because if they had a higher end stereo, for example and wanted it replaced. All you could do is give them the most expensive stereo available. That actually helped.!! :)

And no.. We're not going to play Stylist... As it's pretty much the same as the AD career just in that you're doing makeovers on Sims. And yeah no..

I have more fun renovating Sims houses by using testingcheatsenabled on - shift-click on lot and select Build on Lot than I do trying to do the AD career. Same with stylist. Although with the Sim you click on them and take them into CAS to give 'em a makeover. They can't complain!! :)
Title: Re: Architectural Design Playthrough
Post by: Nindigo on April 30, 2021, 02:44:42 PM
I totally agree! Renos and makeovers using regular build mode and CAS is way more fun and satisfying - I'm going to stick to that ;D Sims are thankless beings. I really think their opinion of a renovation is decided by a die roll in the algorythm. And how desirable is that when you just put a lot of effort and thought into a job and the die tells the Sim to complain?

I might get stubborn at some point and try to reach level 10 in this profession, but...I'm going to have to steel myself first and find a bottomless well of patience within me somewhere.

Nevertheless, it's awesome to try all these Ambitions things out <3

I might save a save file from this go around with the AD career, but I am still not sure if I want to put myself through trying to get to level 10.  I know reviews get better and whatnot, but this playthrough of the career made me more anxious and I didn't like that feeling.

Plus there's the feeling like you've done an awesome job on the remodel and then getting slapped in the face with a terrible review... That don't feel so good.

Agreed. It is a very punishing profession. I guess the game has to have something for everybody :-\

Just read through this thread because this is the career one of my sims has chosen after he fulfilled his LTW. I like it because it's kind of my thing.
Good job on the renos MrsFlynn. I did a reno in the "swampy" house as well.
One of the things I noticed is that my guy ended up nicking his client's cars. Apparently this is a known bug but I ended up selling some pretty fancy cars so as a result, my sim ended up being quite wealthy. :D Being a klepto isn't even one of his traits.
Check you family inventories to see if you have picked up a car or two.

My new game sim is in the stylist career. It's the same type of thing. Clients either like the new look or they don't. I'm on the fence about continuing. I think today I'll go ahead and load up my saved games to my new computer and go from there. I can't do much else today since I'm stuck on the couch with a sore foot.
