Title: Lapaige's Shell Challenge #2
Post by: MrsFlynn on December 18, 2022, 06:10:31 PM
Lapaige has shared a new challenge to build a house from the shell pictured below.  I love sharing these challenges because I enjoy seeing how our builds turn out.  We have different building styles so whatever we're working on comes out unique. :)

Original dimensions of the shell.

Example of what it looks like rotated.

  ----

   ~ Rules and Information:

 –  Keep the outer walls the same dimensions as what's originally posted in the screenshot.
 –  Can add a garage, foundation, porch, basement or more floors desired.
 –  Use Any sized lot you want.
 –  Indoor walls can be done however you like.
 –  Additional floors and basement(s) can be whatever size.
 –  Custom Content can be used in build.
 –  Does not need to be furnished.

 –  Submit progress screenshots and details of the build as you build via a new post in the thread.   How to Add Images to a Post ~ Using Imgbb Image Mod (https://jadekitten.net/mfhot/index.php?topic=22.msg22#msg22)
 –  Save a copy of the original dimensions screenshot to your desktop and rotate/flip in Paint it to get different ideas for the build.
 –  Can Upload the build to either Houses (https://jadekitten.net/mfhot/index.php?board=13.0) or Community Lots (https://jadekitten.net/mfhot/index.php?board=14.0) when finished, if you'd like to share.  How To: Upload a House or Lot (https://jadekitten.net/mfhot/index.php?topic=85.msg387#msg387) to the Media Room Board.
 –  Can use Builder's Island to create your build. See this post (https://jadekitten.net/mfhot/index.php?topic=31.msg2145#msg2145) for more details.
 –  Those who host these challenges can participate, as long as they rotate/flip the shell/lot.

Nice Start!!

I'll edit in my starting build when I start and get 1st draft. lol :)

ETA:

Here's the plan I followed: (rotated and flipped)

Here's how my 1st draft turned out:

Built on a 30x30 lot.

House seems to be: 22 squares wide - side to side of lot and 20 squares front to back of lot.

The biggest challenge so far is getting a roof I like. I've spent most of the afternoon playing around with it.

I'm still in the thinking stage. Not sure if I like what I've done... which is still that 1st draft. lol I'm actually thinking about the roof as well, even though I'm far from trying to make a roof on the place.

I've got window/doors in now but I haven't decided what to do with the exterior. But it's time to quit for now. Dinner time and then cribbage.

I'm so cold! I've had my fireplace on all day and finally had to give in and turn the heat up. So far the fireplace has been sufficient but not today, or for the rest of the week. I have to go out to pick up a grocery order tomorrow (ordered online), and I'm dreading it.

I love that we can order groceries online and get curb-side pickup.

I'm going to be jumping back in-game to see what I can do with my build.

Have a fun game night!! :)

ETA:

Progress screenshots!!

I rotated the original lot that I made, because I wasn't quite happy with it and came up with this.

I was able to find the right flip and rotation I used:

I had to study the layout in my game vs the dimensions screenshot. Then was able to flip and rotate it properly so my layout looks like the layout of the dimensions screenshot.

It gives me better vibes. lol  Though I'm still trying to iron out the details of the main floor.  Right now I'm feeling it's a possible 1-1/2 story home with basement.

Guess I won't be going for groceries today. My son says the roads are terrible and to stay home.

I'm guessing you got some of this too, Mrsflynn.

Not as much, but yep we got some.  It's somewhat melting, but it may freeze tonight and be a real mess in the morning. Then it's suppose to warm up a bit towards the weekend.

ETA:

Here's my progress screenshots:

I wanted to get these progress shots before I started trying windows/doors and such.  I'm liking how this is turning out so far. :)

Here's some more progress shots.

It's an open livingroom/kitchen/diningroom area with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms in the back. Space for 2 more small bedrooms and a bath upstairs. Open basement for skilling/family or just to have more space for big families.

Looking at the photos, it looks like a country farm house. lol  :)

I see it more as an almost chalet. Very charming. I picture a big stone wood-burning fireplace in the living room. I like how we each see something different.
I did a little bit on mine today but I was busy doing "real" stuff. Tomorrow I'm hoping the roads will be clear enough that I can get out and pick up my groceries. It's going to be a busy few days for me as I prepare for my Christmas Eve dinner. But I take lots of breaks. :D

Looking at the front of the house again it does look like a chalet style.

As I was working on it last night I thought of adding a fireplace, but decided against it because I love the light the front windows are bringing in. :)

Slow but busy today so I only took a couple of screen shots and not much else.

Thank you. :) Just on my way out to pick up Chinese food. It's practically across the street but I'll bet the roads are like a skating rink.  :o

Yep, the roads are ice rinks.  Good description. lol

Trying to work out an inner conflict of which build I like better.  I tried working with same floorplan different roof stlye and didn't like it, so I kept scrapping the saves. I absolutely -love- the front of the house, but wasn't fully sure about the left side of the house, so I did a test build.

Front of House

Left-side: Original build (LSBC-03g)

Left-side: Test build (LSBC-03h)

Seeing the builds side by side the original build is more pleasing to me, so that's what I'll be going with.

As I was looking on my desktop I saw a folder for the house I'm working on and inside that folder was a screenshot of the front of the house that I haven't shared. lol

Hopefully you were able to fix the terrain bleed by going back a save and placing the house again?

Nice!
I moved my house to a different lot but discovered that the lot across the street has a bleed. Good grief!
I'm in the process of changing out windows to ones better suited from the house. I have the landscaping done.

You did a wonderful job on your house!! Love the windows and doors you used.  :)

I think I may have deleted one of my working copies of my house, cause I can't find it. I want to furnish it a little bit as well.

Thank you. Bau5 windows and random doors. :)
It reminds me of the several garden home complexes we have in this area.

I like mine, but I think I like yours better.   It has a unique charm to it. :)

Definitely reminds me more of a garden house than mine does. lol

Thank you. I think the shutters and landscaping made the difference. It was pretty blah before.

I found my unfurnished copy of the house and started with that.  I didn't furnish it a whole lot. When it comes to bedrooms, I'm feeling a little uninspired, I left 'em unfurnished.  But I did a little something for the kitchen and livingroom area.

Very cute. It looks like it should be in Utah or Colorado. It has that vibe to me. :)

I opted not to put in a basement or a loft. I almost always use a foundation but for this one I just laid out the footprint and started building from there. I didn't feel like taking it apart and adding a foundation. I'm not sure I have enough room for stairs for a loft.

Thank you!! :) It definitely has that vibe to it. lol

I tried going without a foundation and basement but it didn't feel right to me. The loft or 1/2 story popped in my head while I was drawing out the house in the beginning.

I have been puzzling over something for the last 10 mins. Something didn't look right. Then I went back to the original posts and see where you reversed yours (mirror image). That was completely throwing me off. :D

I see the wall where the door is behind your stairs that is indented. The terms of the challenge is that exterior walls can't be moved. :) When I did the first Missy challenge, I asked about adding a bay window. I was told I could use the in-game one but not to change the walls to make one. Nor could I add a wall around an exterior chimney.

Oooohhhh my goodness, the back door is indented. *Blush*  And I'm the one who noted the rules in the first post.

I hope it's not too terrible of me not to want to change it? I've spent a lot of time building different versions of the house and this layout was the one I came back to, so I just went with it. I don't mind taking it as a challenge fail.
