Title: MrsFlynn's Tacky Shell Challenge #4

Made 2 shells. One on a 30x20 lot and the other on a 25x20 lot.

Thinking in the way it gives me more options when I go to place it on a 30x30 lot. As my rule for myself is that I have to flip or rotate the lot.

I ended up choosing the shell that was on the 25x20 lot and added it to a 30x30 lot. Adding a stairwell for basement, foundation and inner walls.

Not sure if the windows - Mutske's (Windows Country (https://www.thesimsresource.com/downloads/details/category/sims3-sets-objects-construction/title/windows-country-set/id/1172537/)) go with the house. Love the windows, just not sure if the fit the feel I'm wanting to go with.

Yep, I understand. If it helps ?? you don't have to furnish it ifin' you don't want to.  :)

Since my last post I tried different window sets, most of which I didn't like all that much and didn't go with the look I am after.  Until I found Mutske's Victorian Windows (https://www.thesimsresource.com/downloads/details/category/sims3-sets-objects-construction/title/victorian-windows-add-on/id/1171535/) Add-on. What a perfect fit and love the doors that came with it as well. Errm.. The trees are in the way of getting a screenshot of the other side of the house. I'll fix that once I'm back in-game.

Looking good!

I decided I was going to finish the Daycare challenge before carrying on with the builds.

I started the shell too. Here's what I have so far. I thought this house wanted to be a Victorian, so I gave it Mansford roof, but now I think it wants to be a craftsman. I guess it's a Craftorian. I just figured out how to use the diagonal foundation to make the corners. I learn something new everyday it seems.

I love that - Craftorian!! Great description. Awesome job!! I love the roofline, windows and the burnt Orange ? color.  Looking forward to seeing what you do with the inside. :)

I'm stuck on what siding I want to add to the house. lol

Nice, Cheesy. I don't think I've seen those windows with the stained glass that you have in the front. Where do they come from?
Title: Re: Shell Challenge #4
Post by: MrsFlynn on February 17, 2023, 09:54:41 AM
The windows by the front door are from:

Dragon Valley (Windows)
https://store.thesims3.com/dragonvalley.html?categoryId=12642

The ones above the front door might be from Dragon Valley as well, but don't seem to be showing up on the items list drop down box in the link above.

I've seen them before and have used them, but it's been awhile.

I was struggling with what to do for the external wall covering, but with a little help from Lapaige I came up with something that I'm fairly pleased with. It's a stucco paint and brick combo.

The outside is done for the most part, except for the landscaping. Now it's time to work on the inside a bit. I've got an idea for the kitchen, but not sure about the rest of the house.

Today on Notes from My Build Diary..... lol

Apparently the custom content I downloaded for this build (windows, doors and kitchen sets) are conflicting with each other. I decided to take them out rather than risk it, even though all the conflict seems to be is that they're sharing resources. I'm wanting to share the build after I'm finished with it and don't want the house to become unusable or make players game crash because of the iffy cc I added to the house.

The windows aren't causing any problems (at least up to this point), but they show a conflict in Delphy's Dashboard (https://modthesims.info/d/387006). While the tool isn't 100 percent reliable - my game crashed 3 times last night trying to re-texture the kitchen walls after adding the kitchen sets. I looked over the cc I was using and found it all seems to be conflicting with each other and items in the single sets, so I trust something isn't right with something in my cc folder. -

Here's a screenshot of the beautiful kitchen.

I got the screenshot before trying to re-texture the kitchen walls with base game masonry or stone texture.

Yes I'm pretty sure the windows I'm using in my house are from Dragon Valley. I just recently got that world and the windows are new to me too. I love MrsFlynn's house - such a pretty kitchen. I only have a few CC items I build with, and I think I lost them in the Great EA App debacle. I didn't realize how much I used them and came to rely on them. I'll have to download them again sometime.

You're looking at a CC addict here.  ::)  ;D

Here is mine so far. I'm having some health issues at the moment and it's hard to concentrate and focus.

Thank you for the compliment on the kitchen!! :)

I am going to have to fully re-think the kitchen on this build. As I was doing more testing some of the kitchen objects started acting odd in that they'd change color - turn black in color, almost looking burt - like bad cc does.  It's been a long time since I've seen any cc do this:

No game crashing while testing, but the way it's acting made me take quit the game and delete it from my mods folder.

If you need help finding any of the CC you might be missing, ask Lapaige - she's awesome at finding CC!!

I love how your house is coming along, Lapaige!! The stone and siding mix is awesome!! I also love the color too!! lol
Title: Re: Shell Challenge #4
Post by: Lapaige46 on February 19, 2023, 12:06:02 PM
Thanks. I can't decide if it's going to be Craftsman or Farmhouse style. Probably a bit of both. Nothing to say you can't have a Craftsman house on the farm, right?

Did you test your kitchen in live mode? I've had that happen with some CC but it was ok in live.
Title: Re: Shell Challenge #4
Post by: MrsFlynn on February 19, 2023, 02:08:44 PM
I didn't test it in live mode no.  Both the kitchen island and counters were giving me too much of a bad feeling all around, so I decided to delete them.

I don't mind if bad or iffy custom content crashes my game, but when I share a house and if I heard/read that it's doing that to those who download a house of mine that would really make me feel bad.

All I can think of when I see this house is maybe Shabby-chic style?

Aw well, I do like how it's coming along. I've added and removed some custom content. Tried to sneak back in the barstool from Brookhaven Kitchen, but it still caused my game to crash, so I deleted and went back to what I had. Darn it!! I really liked the full wooden barstool. lol  I also did a little something with the bathrooms and added a couple of bedrooms to the basement.

Okay, I think I have the main floor done. I decided after the fact to add the fireplace, so I don't know what the best location would be, but this kind of made sense. I struggled with whether I should add window coverings, but except for the study, I don't think I will on the main floor. Nothing seemed to fit that well or be the right style. I changed out the light in the hallway which is why there are two nearly identical shots of it.

I haven't done much on my build at all. I'm totally stuck on furnishing the bedrooms at the moment.

Furnishing and decorating aren't really my thing unless I feel inspired to do so. Or I'm actually playing with the house with a current family. This is why some of my houses that I've shared are either not furnished or have only basic furnishings in them.

In any case, I do want to try doing something with the bedrooms. Do you have any furnishing inspiration?
Title: Re: Shell Challenge #4
Post by: Lapaige46 on February 22, 2023, 02:47:58 PM
I base my houses and decorating on wether or not I would like to live in/with it. I have a lot of favorited CC bits and pieces that I use a lot and it also depends on the era of the house and whether it's been updated. Some I like to keep vintage and others I'll modernize the kitchen. Not much help I know. I get a lot of ideas from decorating websites, and also just from doing a room search in TSR.

I'm at that point in my house right now and trying to get motivated. I just loaded up the game and realized that I need to go out and get a prescription. Ergghh.  :-\

Sometimes it helps to either create a household or randomize the household who would live there, then use their traits and favorite colors as a guide. This is also why I like the Random House Generator thingy as it give a description for a guide. Right now I've emptied Adventureland (the Sunset Valley "empty world") of all its buildings except the two with the adventurers living in them and the one where I   placed a couple from the bin to get me started in the game. I will eventually move them into some houses I build myself and bulldoze where they are living now. My goal is to have nothing but my original builds in this world - even creating walk-in rabbithole venues using rabbithole rugs. Like MrsFlynn, I've also created homes with just the bare necessities in them. Then I placed them in empty worlds that I let Story Progression populate. Then I wait to see who moves in and decorate according to their personalities and needs.

I've never seen/heard of Adventureland. I'll have to check it out.
I'm doing a very similar thing with Riverview. I took out all the houses and many of the community buildings. I now have small subdivisions with similar houses, the island has a lot of leisure areas and across the river where the hospital is, I've made into the business district. Someone on the FB board said they were going to do an album. I think I might do that.

Thank you for the suggestions. I usually find it harder to build a house with Sims on the lot. lol This might be due to me first learning how to build a house via Edit Town, but more importantly the lag it brings with having a family on the lot or being in a played state.

I've tried several times (building with family on the lot) since then and go back to building the house via Edit town usually in a new save to get rid of the lag.

I usually build houses/community lots in an emptied version of Sunset Valley, but this time I'm building my house using Builder's Island.

Steam players may not have Adventureland by default. It was offered to those who registered WA with Origin, or purchased the game via Origin. It only has two households. It looks to have all the original houses and community lots, but no community lots. https://sims.fandom.com/wiki/Adventureland
Title: Re: Shell Challenge #4
Post by: Cheeseweasel on February 23, 2023, 03:40:19 PM
I actually didn't have Adventureland until I switched to the EA App, and mine had the community lots too, but I deleted them all. I think I'll furnish this house - at least the upstairs with the Glover household, whom I moved from the bin to a starter home, in mind. I left Story Progression on while I developed background stories for a different family I created for this world. In the meantime, it seems the female got herself preggers, so I need to make sure the upper floor has a nursery. I'm going to work on it a little tonight.

I've been in the ER again most of the day so I'm not getting anything done. My whole left side is numb from my scalp to my toes. More follow-up appts to come. I'm probably not even going to get the FB S3 Build shell challenge done. :(

So, I designed the upper floor of my house with Gwen Glover and Holden Wonzy in mind. They are a household from the bin. The description said they were friends but very different: she is artistic and outgoing while he is an absent-minded bookworm. They have some common ground as they both have a good sense of humor. I dropped them off as Mosquito Cove and set about building some challenge houses. The description of the household ended with the question about whether they would just remain good friends or become something more. I left story progression on while I was building and situating other families, and they opted to be "something more" when I checked on them, they had gotten married and were expecting a baby boy. Gwen's favorite color is yellow, and Holden's is green, which explains the color scheme in the upper floors. There is a master bedroom with en suite bathroom, a nursery, a kids' room, and a rather generic guest room. It also has hobby spaces upstairs. I don't have pictures of the common area or guest bedroom in this photo-drop.

You did a great job on the house!! :)

I'm getting so frustrated with the custom content I'm using in this house. Hopefully you don't mind if I borrow your idea of possibly using the the long windows from Dragon Valley as well?

I'm not sure what I'm going to right yet. Thinking of testing a little more. I'd rather be able to keep the windows I have if possible.

Thank you!! I decided to go with windows from Ambitions and doors from Seasons.

I am still in-testing with my house. It seems stable enough, however I haven't done much with it since taking out some of the CC doors and windows I was using. I added most of the furniture and edited wall colors/coverings while still having the cc windows and it seemed okay. I still removed them because I felt it was the right thing to do.  I really like the way the windows from Ambitions add character to the house. lol

For now I left the CC counter windows in the attic space. To the main floor I added windows from Ambitions and Doors from Seasons. Left the vase of flowers on the counter of the island, because there's just something about them.  :)

Here are some photos of the house:

Very nice! I have a couple go-to flower arrangements I almost always include in my houses - the big sunflower bouquet I use for entryways and sideboards in dining rooms and a one with white flowers from Generations (I think) for a table centerpiece.

I logged in and immediately saw the photo of the vase with flowers on the table and thought of Generations. I keep forgetting to use those. *Blush*

The big Sunflower bouquet looks familiar as well. I'm blanking as to where it comes from, maybe base game? -- Derp how about World Adventures. hehehehe

I did a little landscaping the other day. Here's some screenshots:

A name hasn't come to me for this house, so I'm still trying to think of a name.

Thank you guys so much! Here is another update:

The interior of the house is slowly coming along. I 100% blame Mrs. Flynn for the amount of CC in this build because she recently recommended so many lovely CC pieces to me that I just HAD to install!

The exterior of the house is almost finished. Ignore the fences by the pathway. I use them as guides when applying terrain paint.

I never thought of blaming her for my CC addiction. Now it all makes perfect sense. :)

lol!!

Part of me wants to proudly say Thank you!! And the other part of me says wait.. That can't be true cause I don't really have a whole lot of CC in my own game. Specially since I know how it effects it negatively when I have too much in my game. At the moment I have 148mb of mods and custom content in my game. I feel that's hardly anything compared to some players.

Thank you so much! I think the flooring is from Pralinesims.

I have just a little bit of CC too... just about 12 GBs.  :-X

Looking over my previous post I see that I didn't mention how to get the folder size. Sorry about that.

To find out what size your mods folder. Right-click on Mods, select Properties and look at Size or Size on Disc.

Thank you for letting me know what to look for, Mpart :)

At first I wasn't crazy about the exterior, but it really grew on me.

Here are some closer shots of the living room and kitchen, which are my favorite rooms in this entire build:

This was a really fun challenge. Thank you for creating it, Mrs. Flynn!
