Title: Can Someone Please Help with an Awning Issue?
Post by: Lapaige46 on December 20, 2020, 05:07:43 PM

I'm having a problem placing this awning. I can get it so far and then it won't go the rest of the way. The part that is on stuck with everything else intact. When the rest of it wouldn't stick, I removed the posts, the steps the stairs and the patio tables.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I've never placed awnings before, but I am going to hazard to guess it's like placing the roof on the porch/deck.

I usually don't place the stairs till after everything is placed including the roof, draw a wall around the porch, place free wood flooring as a ceiling, and then place the roof.

That way it doesn't leave those "blank" areas as shown in your photo to the left near the middle of the porch.

I ended up removing everything including the bay windows, the roofs, the posts, the upper windows. I placed a wall around the porch and the awnings stuck to the wall. But as soon as I started removing the wall, the awnings went with it. Nothing I did worked to eliminate that gap. I have no idea what was causing that since I removed everything that could have been causing an overhang.

I have a ceiling beam (Emma living room ceiling beam) in my misc decor and I was able to attach those to the front edge of the porch (with moveobjects on) and the awnings stuck to that. But then I couldn't place the stairs until I added another 4 sections of porch.
I don't understand why it happened though because yesterday I worked on a house where the awnings attached to the porch just fine with the stairs in place.
My little project is proving to be an exercise in frustration. :D

I'm sorry that didn't help. If I had a copy of the building itself, I might be able to help better.

That could be problematic since it's part of a larger scene including a park on a 64x64 lot. I've restarted a few times by creating each of the 4 adjoining buildings on a small lot and moving them to a larger one. I can't remember how that worked out but I might try it again.

I had an idea to try last night based on the photo you shared, but I was so tired that my brain just wouldn't function.

So I'm going to try my idea today to see if I'm able to make a similar building that has a porch with an awning.

If I am able to get it to work like I am hoping, I'll take notes and photos and share. :)

Between the two of us we should be able to fix it!! Hopefully!!

Thanks. I have some stuff to do today so I may not get back to it but I'll also share another house with awning that I'm working on and had no trouble with.

I was happily going along building a cute house, just the shell of it. No windows/doors and whatnot. I gave it a porch, with a little "overhang" for the awning to be placed.

When I deleted the wall after placing the awning, the awning disappeared.  Come to find out, awnings need to be placed against the wall. At least that's how's it's behaving in my game. It won't allow me to place above the fence railing.

I look forward to seeing what you're able to come up with. :)

I finally got it to place and stay put. I used moveobjects on to place the awning and made sure the porch had enough squares to place - if that makes sense. There were no gaps in the square lines.

Here's what the house looks like with the awning.

If there are gaps, you can fix them with extra columns so the build has enough squares to place the awning even with moveobjects on. You can delete the extra columns after you've placed the awning.

More photos of the house:

You mention your new build is coming along together better? Did you do something different to get the awning to place? If so, what?

Nice house!! It wasn't until I placed some "beams" across the porch that I was able to place the awnings but even then I had to remove the stairs. I still had that "grid" by the porch that was blocking the awnings from attaching at first and I don't know where they came from because I had deleted almost everything that could have cause it. I scaled the porch right back, removed the bay windows and roof, removed the windows from upstairs, etc.

Ah!! Maybe that was it. I didn't have enough posts. I have another house to do with awnings (more pix from Cape May) so I'll see what happens. Now I have to go and do something productive instead of playing. :D

Thank you!!

It looks like you fixed the awning on the one building. I noticed that too when I went to put the awning back I had to delete some things first and then add them with moveobjects on. It's somewhat of a pain.

The grid.. That's what the "squares" are called. I couldn't think of what they were called this morning for the life of me.

You did an awesome job on your B&B build. :)

Sure is a pain.
You must be older than I though if you can't remember things. :D
Thank you. It's still a work in progress.

I have a couple more pictures of beautiful B&Bs from that same Cape May area. I drove past a huge gorgeous heritage house today that I had no idea was even here. That's going on my list as well. My poor sims are being terribly neglected.

Nice house Lapaige! Glad you got the awnings to work. How did we get awnings anyway or are they cc?

They are in buy mode > Curtains (can't think of actual category), from Ambitions. Errm... at least the ones I found. Go into Create a Style to find different color options or to recolor them.

You know I think I've seen those, but just never paid attention to them, LOL I found them exactly where you said they were. :)

Oh good!! Thank you for letting me know. I wasn't in-game at the time so I couldn't go look. I have noticed though they do get in the way of taking photos of stuff or Sims on the porch. They don't disappear like if were to put the wall down.

I discovered that yesterday when I was trying to add windows to my lower level.

I seem to have a problem with a wildly swinging camera. It will fly up or fly down and I can't seem to get a ground level shot.

The wildly swinging camera that won't allow ground level shots is an issue with the game itself it seems.

Though I find if your on certain lots and can aim just right you can get ground level shots, but it's few and far between.

I've had that problem when I have 3+ stories. The camera is not stable at the 3rd level and above.
