Bookstore owner/operator - is this possible?
« on: February 01, 2023, 10:19:24 AM »
I'm trying to do something that I'm not sure is even possible. My new Sim is based on a character in a book series I've been reading. She's the owner of a bookstore. I have built a bookstore and place a rabbithole rug in it so sims can go into the rabbit hole and "buy" books but also, sims can browse the stacks, sit and read and interact with others.
Through the daycare challenge when Daycare Debbie went the the bookstore, Myrna was behind the cash register.

Through Nraas I just gave Myrna the job of bookstore clerk but I suspect that means she'll go into the rabbit hole and not stand behind the register. I'm going to do a money cheat so that she can purchase the bookstore but I'm thinking I should remove the rabbithole. I can assign her as a clerk at the cash register. Now that I have WA I can have an actual book register so that's good.

Does this make sense? Does anyone have any suggestions?

It might be if you have a mod that supports that career?  I am unaware of such a mod.  However there is a book store register the comes with the World Adventure expansion pack.

Giving a Sim the job of the bookstore clerk means that the Sim will be working at the bookstore rabbithole. If you're going to remove the rabbithole building, you should at least put the rabbithole bookstore rug in some place, so you're town has a functioning bookstore.  Some careers are programmed to need the bookstore rabbit hole. Regardless if it's the building or rug.

I've attached Rabbithole rugs in a zipped file in this post.

I do have the rug and the cash register in place, but I'm just now realizing that as an owner, I'd have to be upgrading the bookstore and I like it the way it is. I think I won't have her buy it but just work there. I may have to do the money cheat though so she can at least pay her bills. LOL
Getting this working the way I want it to might be challenging for me or an exercise in futility. I have all the mods that should make it work, but we'll see.

I've tried the buying the community lot/business and the game telling you have to upgrade this or that. I got to the point that I just sold it because either I didn't want to upgrade anymore - I liked the build as is or there wasn't anymore room to upgrade.

That's why I don't want to purchase it.
I've set the cash register so that Myrna is tending it and for some reason the townies seem to be very happy for her. They're cheering and throwing confetti.  :D

The way I do these kinds of things is by using the Savvy Seller items from Midnight Hollow. The game won't technically recognize that I own the business, but I give my Sim some kind of open-hours, non-rabbithole job, and send them to man the register. I check the total sales at the end of the day by clicking on the register and use the familyfunds cheat to add that amount to my household. I also use the familyfunds cheat to "purchase" the property if I want them to own it. This way there's no requirement for upgrading. For a bookstore, the sims would be buying the bookcases rather than the books themselves, however the bookcases would still be there, so you wouldn't need to keep replacing them. Also, it's possible to have both the Savvy Seller register and the WA book register in the same building. I don't know when or if you will get back to this project, but I thought I'd share my strategies just the same. Take care.

Thanks, Cheesy. I have used that collection for a bakery/ice cream parlor but never really played it much to get  a feel for it. I have also buit a bookstore and have one of my sims running it but I haven't yet figured out how to add inventory for purchase. That's something to work on  when my brain starts to function properly again.
