Merry Christmas everyone. Our traditions have evolved over the years. When I was a kid, we spent Christmas Eve with my mom's side of the family, had a big pot luck with ham and turkey and such. Then we'd open presents. Eventually, we realized that people got filled up on all the appetizers and didn't have room for ham and turkey, so we just brought snacks instead. Christmas morning was opening presents with immediate family - parents and siblings, and in the afternoon we went to my dad's side of the family.
Both Mom's and Dad's sides grew to the point that it was difficult for all to meet at once, so with the passing of the grandparents, the families started new traditions.
Today we still do the Christmas Eve snacks and play the "white elephant gift game" instead of buying presents for particular people. We used to have a Santa suit and one of the adults would dress up and hand out presents to the kids and get their pictures taken when we were still celebrating with the extended family, but the suit stayed with the family with the most small children - but all is not lost! We happen to have a gorilla costume, so instead, we get visits by Clyde the Christmas Gorilla, who hands out presents to the kids high school age and younger, and they get their picture taken with Clyde.
Christmas Day, after all the families have opened their own presents at home, we meet around lunch time to eat whatever didn't get eaten the night before and open presents again - this time we drew names.
This is the first year my oldest son isn't spending Christmas with us. He's back in Connecticut spending it with his fiancé's family. They were out here for Thanksgiving, and we had "Thanksmas" with them then. Time for a "new normal" with new traditions, it seems.
